Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) - Played by Wolfpack345

Description
October 29, 1962

The US Air Force has conducted limited early morning strikes on Cuban SAM sites following the loss of a second U-2 spy plane over the country. Now Castro and Khrushchev have ordered all Soviet cargo ships to break through President Kennedy's "quarantine". You have received orders authorizing to engage any Soviet flagged merchant ships en-route to Cuba (note: 5 ships). While the Soviets are likely to respond to this move in some capacity, do not fire upon any Soviet warships or aircraft unless attacked first.

Editor Notes:
The Coontz-class has harpoons which isn't historical for the period. For realism, don't use them

One polite correction I'd like to make is to use the DLG Coontz class instead of the DDG version.

@Thorn in terms of realism, the actual blockade took place much further east than Finnish Jager's scenario here, on a 500mi line well east of the Bahamas. There were upwards of fifty USN ships (mostly DDGs, + 4 Carrier Groups) enforcing the quarantine of Cuba between 24 Oct and 21 Nov 62. These were supported by Navy ASW and MPA from Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Key West, etc. The USAF main role was recon of the Cuban mainland and nuclear deterrence, but they did assist in spotting merchants such as the Groznyy .

A good scenario in terms of gameplay. It’s engaging to play, and the challenge of surface ships without ASW helicopters facing submarines adds an extra layer of difficulty. I give it a thumbs up.

However, I must point out that from a realism perspective, it’s doubtful that the blockade would be carried out solely by the navy. Given the distance to Cuba, most of the work should be handled by the air force. Alternatively, the fleet should at least have air support in the form of Orions.
