Description
September 28, 1969

The Soviet Navy's humiliating defeat at the hands of the Chinese Air Force on September 2 has resulted in a shift in Soviet naval strategy. Soviet bombers have since succeeded in damaging significant areas of the Port of Shanghai, closing the port to foreign imports, for now. Since then, foreign aid has now been entering China via ports near Hong Kong, well outside the range of Soviet aircraft.

Two Echo-Class submarines are to strike Chinese ships near Huangpo Port, north of Hong Kong, using cruise missiles. Any Chinese land installations are secondary targets. A Soviet Spy ship will be entering port, disguised as a Vietnamese fishing trawler, in order to provide your submarines with intelligence on available targets. Chinese defenses are considered weak, but local anti-aircraft guns might pose a risk for the spy ship.

Additionally, a small force of Soviet warships will land Spetznaz commandos on Woody Island, in the Paracel Islands. This operation has a significant political goal, and the Kremlin demands its success. The Soviet government plans to transfer the captured Paracel islands to Vietnam, in exchange for their participation in the war against China.

Don't lose the spy ship "Traverz"

I was able to get the troops to woody island and get that objective done! That was exciting. However, because of the SS-N-3 missile's inaccuracy, I was not able to hit the port's buildings effectively. I destroyed all of the ships and most of the buildings were on fire. Sadly, I can't complete because of these inaccurate missiles towards buildings.

As a demonstration of the inadequacy of the Soviet fleet, it’s fine. But in terms of gameplay, the scenario isn’t very good. The coastal ASW launchers make it nearly impossible for the group with the landing ship to approach the island. Additionally, the process of locating a target and attacking it with submarines is rather slow and tedious.

Not sure if it's because I'm using White Sands Realism, but getting to Woody island is nearly impossible due to all the Coastal emplacements + Medium AA that also target ships way before they are in range of their 76mm turrets. It takes one quick lucky shot for your ship to lose propulson. Using the SA-N-1 Goa against those targets also sucks (although rightfully so).
I still liked this campaign tho. Very creative. Looking forward for more!
