Agrarian cultures including the west up until the Industrial Revolution had children as young as 3-4 start planting seeds. During the Industrial Revolution you had children aged 6 being used to clean chimneys, clearing cotton gins and other machines (while they were still running.) One of my ancestors had an 8yo brother die from their arm being severed while clearing cotton from a machine - the things you learn when your mother delves into family history.
