Somero

Description
“Somero” is a map of a small farming town in southwestern Finland. To the north of the town, there is a large forested area, and outside the immediate town area, there are a plethora of small farms, hamlets, and thickets crisscrossing the countryside. A defining feature of the area is a large river that splits the map into two parts. Two larger tributaries split the map further. The varied landscape and realistic road network should offer new strategic and tactical challenges.

The project aimed to recreate the area as it is in real life during the timeframe using satellite imagery and aerial photography. The map is around 95% there, which is good enough for me. The project took roughly 60+ hours, which included preparing materials and the editor's learning process.

I did this project for two reasons. First, I wanted to see how detailed and close to real you could make the maps in Warno. Most official maps are abstracted, and gameplay considerations are a priority. How would a different approach affect gameplay? Are there some insights into how Eugen makes their maps and why they make them the way they do?

Second, this is where I grew up, so I wanted to immortalize the area in video game form. It is a small and quaint little town (legally speaking, a city, but let’s not go there) with the slogan “Bustle of the countryside and peace of the city.”

I am initially releasing both 1v1 and 3v3 scenarios. I have only done limited testing, so please give feedback. The focus on this point is getting the command zones balanced.

Known Issues:

Some of the water areas on higher zoom levels have graphical issues. This is a known shader issue that I cannot fix, and it should not affect gameplay.

Many of the parking areas look weird. This is due to a hidden change to the Smartline used in them that changed the orientation 90 degrees.

Notes:

I had to delete the original mod and reupload as the provided mod upload tools provided didn’t cooperate at the worst possible time (24th December).

The tributaries are a lot thicker than IRL due to engine limitations.

Some challenging to make areas have slight abstraction due to asset limitations. Heavily forested regions have “clearing” and “semiforest” terrain types replacing some otherwise too large areas for gameplay reasons. Some roads and bridges have been added to places where the navigation grid would have otherwise been too lackluster in gameplay.

I get what you mean. I will aim to check for the issue within this month, but I am on vacation currently and my home time is limited so I can't promise a quick fix.

hello, there is a problem with click and destination. When you select somewhere on the map, the unit isn't going exactly where you have selected. I hope you will understand what i want to say. I love your map, i hope you will find a solution

Updated. No revision to map or content, just restoring functionality.

I will update as soon as I am able to. Unfortunately the recent game patch caused the need to update the maps and came at a bad time for me when I am swamped with IRL work.

Sorry, but Salo is too large. Large cities are performance intensive and really time consuming to make. There are some interesting areas *near* Salo on a quick glance, but I won't promise anything. I am currently working on my next map and it is trudging along.
