Blacksmith Tweaks

Description
Warning is below, but TL;DR: I'm 101% confident this causes balance issues, if you have an obscene amount of unspent gold and iron.

This mod overhauls the blacksmith behavior to what I initially thought it would work like, albeit with some changes.
The blacksmith allows you to upgrade an item's BASE item level (read: the level you found it on), but prevents you from upgrading if:
  • The item is beyond your current character level.
  • The item cannot be equipped after upgrading.

Blacksmith upgrades still make equipment upgrade scaling much cheaper. Iron is only used when upgrading from an increment of 5 (upgrading towards ilvl 6, 11, 16, etc).

As an added extra bonus, the game now randomly hands out item upgrade levels (the "+1" after the item level) to all your currently equipped items after a boss is defeated (exceptions are Totem Pole, which does not upgrade anything and the final boss, which gives two chances), but only if the following conditions are met:
  • A random chance of 50% is rolled for each item,
  • If the item is not +15 already, and...
  • If the combined item level and upgrade level is not higher than the current area level.
The game lets you know which items are upgraded after an eligible boss. If nothing shows, that means nothing was eligible for upgrade (ilvl too high) or all the chances are missed.

WARNING: This definitely will make the game much easier, as it alleviates most of the grind for new gear and allows you to focus on solely getting higher quality/tier gear. Though the upgrades might be cheap with a maximized blacksmith and an exorbitant amount of gold and iron.

No problem! Sorry it took me so long to figure out what exactly you were talking about (since there's quite a lot of reasons why scaling could be way different per item), lol.

tysm for the answer <3

For all the different variants of equipment, there's a page in the wiki for it: https://wiki.heroesofhammerwatch2.com/Equipment

Items exist in various tiers of power, in addition to the item level. For example, Studded Leather (third tier DEX armor) gives +15% weapon attack speed in comparison to the Leather Armor (second tier DEX armor), which only gives 10% weapon attack speed.

You can generally assume that the fancier its sprite is and the higher its stat requirements in comparison to its level, the greater its difference, as later tier gear scales better than lower tier gear.

so then maybe a dumb question as i don't know how this works, but i have some items that drop that give +15% attack speed. Armor items that i am sure are just vanilla. And a same level upgraded item only gives +10%, pretty sure the items are both just vanilla and attack speed should go up with levels i assume?

This mod only changes how item levels work - no real changes were made to the equipment and how it scales. Some modded item types have crazy high damage scaling in comparison to vanilla.

or maybe another mod i have installed idk

so idk if it's me but it fels like my items are not scaling correctly, as i just picked up a new weapon on the same level and it dealt 100 more damage, from 70 to 170

That's a relief! Again, thank you very much for taking the time to test it for me.

Sorry for the delay. Haven't really played the last number of days, but it seems to work now. We're both getting upgrades, regardless of who's host.
