[B42] Kentucky Knowledge

Description
Description
Ever felt it's a bit odd that your character, having lived in Kentucky, wouldn't know their own starting town or at least the immediate surroundings when the apocalypse hits?
Kentucky Knowledge addresses this by ensuring that your character retains some local knowledge based on their starting location.

This mod comes in two versions:
  • Kentucky Knowledge (Mod ID: KentuckyKnowledge):
This is the primary version. When you start a new game, this mod will automatically reveal the map area corresponding to the town you spawned in. The idea is that your character would naturally be familiar with the town they lived in before the outbreak. If, for some reason, your starting location isn't within a predefined town's boundaries (e.g., a very remote spawn in a challenge map or due to other mods), a smaller radius around your character will be revealed instead.

  • Kentucky Knowledge (Full) (Mod ID: KentuckyKnowledgeFull):
This version is for those who prefer a more comprehensive overview from the start. It will automatically reveal all map areas for you at the beginning of a new game, regardless of your chosen game mode or spawn point.

Existing Saves
Kentucky Knowledge: This version is designed to work at the very beginning of a new game. Enabling it on an existing save will have no effect.
Kentucky Knowledge (Full): You can safely enable this version for an existing save. The full map will be revealed the next time you load your game.

Important Note for Both Versions: Once any map area has been revealed by this mod, the change is permanent for that save file. Disabling or removing the mod will not make your character forget the map areas that were revealed. This is because the mod uses the game's native system for marking map areas as known, which is stored in your save.

@velvet you often dont know multiple cities and towns well enough to carry a detailed map in your head of them. I know my way around State College if i stick to Athertin St and shit but past that IDK. Coupled with the fact that this is the 80s and your character should not start with that level of knowledge. I know of Philipsburg and have been there can get to a few landmarks but thats it. Hardly enough to consider the area revealed to me in the level of detail i would need to justify having complete knowledge like the map symbolizes. So your character has been up and down every st from Brandenburg to Louisville yeee right get real. You sound like one of those D&D players who while playing D&D want to be level 20 over night, know everything, have everything, etc

Is there a version of this mod or something similar for B42 for mp use

How about a traveler version where you know the immediate area around the spawn and the shortest route to edge of map via a road?

I'd passed on this initially since I don't often play challenge starts anyway, but the new version is really cool. Nice middleground between knowing everything and somehow not even knowing the street you spawned in on despite default spawn settings implying you lived there.

I think it'd also be neat to have a version that reveals all the major towns but not the whole map if that'd be possible. That way you could start knowing all the "important" stuff that a more well traveled person in the area might know, but not have knowledge of things like remote wilderness locations that you're supposed to explore to find. That said, I imagine it'd be the most niche and least used version, so it might not be worth the effort depending on how difficult that would be to set up.

Optional is fair enough, some still want to loot map for other town, as for me, im sticking with the full map review :cool_seagull:

After playing for a while and finding maps as loot multiple times, I've come to the conclusion that it indeed makes more sense not to reveal all map areas fully. Doing so would mean having to remove all lootable maps, as they would lose their value and become junk, which shouldn't be the case.

Therefore, starting with today's update, the mod will have two versions. The main version will be the one that only reveals knowledge of the town where the character could have potentially lived before, at the start of a new game. The second, optional version will continue to reveal all map areas without exception.
