Armageddon

Description
What is this mod?

Armageddon is a game mode where every death strengthens the powers of darkness. If too many players die, the world will end in a destructive Armageddon. The power of darkness concentrates in Giants; every giant slain buys the players more lives.

Basically, this is a mod that implements survival mode with a collective 10 lives for all players. After ten deaths, the world resets. Players earn ten more lives for every giant they kill.

Why this mod?

I made it because my friends and I love love love survival in DST. It's challenging, it's intense, and it's a lot of fun. But we all have very different schedules, so we can't always play together. So I made a dedicated server. Turns out, if only one person is online in the server and dies in survival mode, it'll reset the world. We don't really want that, but both Endless and Wilderness seem too easy if there's never loss-of-world at stake. So I made this.

It's pretty much Endless mode with a limited number of shared lives that you can get back by slaying giants. So people can play by themselves in our world, die a few times and still impact the survival of the server, but also go regenerate at the spawn portal if no one else is online. It keeps the survival aspect going in a way that's feasible for the dedicated server to implement.

I named it "Armageddon" because I initially intended to have increasingly negative things happen to players in order to up the ante on survival as the number of lives dropped. But I talked with my friends and no one really seemed interested in that--instead we opted for starting with the relatively small 10 lives and keeping the giant-regen mechanic to survive. Especially with the eventual "Through the Ages," coming, it might be best to leave balancing survival difficulty up to Klei for now. I've been running it all week on my 8-man server and we usually hover around 15-ish collective lives. Haven't had to reset yet. I'm satisfied with how it works.

So I hope that explains the use case a bit. :)

Note:

If you are implementing this mod on a world that used to be in the Wilderness gamemode, or otherwise does not have a multiplayer respawn portal, I highly suggest that you manually add one somewhere in your world using the "c_spawn("multiplayer_portal")" console command.

@Werewolfkirby probably not. I didn't even know this mod worked anymore! But it must not be so bad since there's 292 current subscribers.

is there a chance I can make it so it doesnt show up as a custom game?

I kinda like your old idea. Maybe if a lot of people die it can summon nightmares and cause everyone to lose some sanity. Maybe killing those nightmares could give a few more lives back?

Right, it definitely doesn't work at the moment.

While we appreciate your blood sacrifice trying to make America great again, I don't think it can make this mod great again. An awful lot has changed in Don't Starve since the new DLCs and updates and I've been out of modding for a while. The code is distributed with the mod and might be an easy thing to update, but I just don't have the time to try right now. Sorry!

Lord and savior trump, i'm sorry to say but this mod just crashs the game for me (and i had only this mod enabled.) Shall i give bloodsacrifes to the wall to fix it?

@milky I'm afraid I wasn't experienced enough to make that configurable when I made this mod. However, if you've downloaded the mod, you can find the actual content in the Don't Starve workshop folder on your computer. There should be a folder for every mod you've downloaded by ID. In the folder for this one is the mod source code, and with a little reading you can tweak it. It's a pretty simple mod that I made here since I don't even know Lua.

Does this mod still work? As far as I know it was broken by an update a while ago and I never touched it... Looks like Klei might've fixed it for me then.

Is there any way to change (in my case reduce) the amount of lives ?
