The race for the H-Gate

Description
“The race for the H-Gate” is a massive redesign of the original Mod “Hellgate”, enabling a more diverse gaming experience. Additional information on mod settings, duration etc. can be found further below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After being stranded on an island and wandering around for what seems to be ages, you find an inconspicuous book, apparently a diary. With tearful eyes you start to read:

“The race for the H-Gate
One day, I cannot even remember when, we woke up finding ourselves lying in the hot sand, our clothes soaked with saltwater. We were stranded. The shining sun made us feel dizzy and the salty breeze coming from the ocean burned in our wounds. Of course, we tried to escape from this hostile place, but going south, west, east or north was in vain. Wherever we were trying to escape, we were stopped by an invisible, but not unrecognizable force, keeping us in a specific area, which was – how peculiar! – rectangularly shaped. When one of my scouts moved his arm rapidly against the force holding us back, it rotted in a matter of seconds. I had to bury him just one day later, which turned out to be the most awful one since our awakening. On our expedition we met other groups, some stranded on freezing cold islands, where, when you did not move, your feet froze to the ground and your destiny was inevitable, others on islands just as uncomfortably hot as ours. We told them about the invisible border surrounding all of us, but some insisted on checking it for themselves. We never met them again. On the last island we discovered we found a book. Of course we did not know it right away, but shockingly we were to discover what this god-forsaken place really was. It was Hell - we were in Hell. Yes, I do mean we literally were in Hell, although I have to admit that we needed some time to accept that. Referring to the information we found in “The Book”, as we liked to call it, one group could escape through the H-Gate. To be honest, to me this means “Heaven gate” but other group members took it for granted that it is actually “Hell gate”. But that did not really matter. Since we knew escaping by breaking out was not possible, we started thinking about breaking in, even though that might make it impossible for us to retreat in case we needed to. I did not think it would help anyone if two groups joined up, since it was very clear to me that only one of the original stranded groups could escape this place, but I had heard of other groups working together, God knows why. For the start I gave the order to build a camp, in order to have a solid operation base. Some call this misery an island clash, others call it a blood tournament and I even heard someone calling this a survival game, but for me this tormented situation will always be the race for the H-Gate. Whoever you are, reader of my report, I wish you all the best. If you are clever enough, you might be able to escape from this prison.”
Now it’s your turn, you are the leader of a stranded group. Generations built a second city in Viady to ensure your survival in Astrada. Find the two seals of power in the “City of Death” and hold them for 15 rounds, then the H-Gate will open. Good luck!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recommended number of Players: 1-4 and 8:
2-4 Players: When playing with 2-4 Players, you might use only every second slot, due to island groups. Position 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 are placed close to each other, though when playing with 2-4 Players you get to see more of the mod when you fill every island group with a player.
8 Players: Tournament, 4 groups of two (It is significantly easier when you match the teams with the neighbored islands mentioned above), For a replay: matches like North vs. South or West vs. East

Turn Timer:
Just as you like. (I prefer starting with one minute and increasing it if the majority of the Player requests it.)

Teams:
I suggest getting known to the mod playing in teams and later on fighting a nice tournament.

Unifier Victory:
I would not activate it during the first game, rather later on.

Select Leaders:
… for getting started quickly.

Tactical Combat Mode:
1-4 Players: Always ask against AI
8 Players: Always auto combat against AI

Bot strength:
Higher than or equal to count

Important advanced rules:
Game Speed: Normal/Fast
Starting Resources: Standard
Starting Skills: Normal
Map exploration: enabled
City Founding: enabled

Duration:
75-150 rounds
Strongly affected by the team settings!

Thanks for the feedback Wonderben. Teleportation for player 3 will be fixed today. The City of Death is not a special City, like Naga Dwellings, Fairy lairs, etc.; therefore it can only produce racial - and later on class units. But there is a Dragon city right under the central City and an Archon City right above it.

Hello, i have played the map with 8 mages (4 teams of 2). Really fun (the colors u chose are really impressive :)). No major bugs exept one : the teleport from the capital for the player number 3 is out of order so try to fix it. Another thing but i dont know if its a bug => the central city cannot produce giants, dragons etc... only racial units. Anyway keep the good work !

It's a good idea, but I prefer sharpening in post, after picking my favorite screenshots. To me, this sweetfx darkens the image to much => I'm gonna stay with my post processing pipeline.

You can see how the game might look like with sweetfx here: https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/screenshot/12734/

Personally I use the preset you see there but I heavily modified it, espececially with lumasharpening, which artificially sharpens the picture and gives you much sharper looking terrain. Playing vanilla is unthinkable to me at this point, way too blurred out. Give it a try it's definitely worth looking into SweetFX, it works with almost any directx game.

I just started on it, I'm maybe 30 minutes into it and looks good so far. I can give some feedback once I finished it but how valuable that would be is questionable, I'm not that advanced a player though I definitely understand all the game systems, but I'm not at the point of how a pro might look at a map and point out flaws or what works exceptionally well. Also I never played extremely island- or subterrain-heavy games yet, which is part of why I like the new experience so far.

I'm not quite sure to what you are referring, but when it comes to the ingame atmosphere, it was achieved by deliberately choosing an environment set, which affects lights, their color and direction, therefore shadows as well. For the screenshots I set the graphic options to Ultra in order to get the best possible output. I added no custom vignette or something similar. Did you like playing the map?
Red Dragon 25 May, 2015 @ 3:41pm
Those colors and the vignette seem very different from vanilla and they look really awesome, do you use your own custom SweetFX or something like it?
