Description
The Bruneian Empire

This mod adds Brunei, led by Bolkiah!

Brunei is a country located in Maritime Southeast Asia in the north of the Island of Borneo. An independent Malay state, Brunei has existed for at least around 600 years, with Chinese sources mentioning a predecessor from as early as 700 AD. Brunei dominated the coast of Borneo, converting to Islam and trading with Europeans to become one of the dominant powers of the region. Colonialism and civil war reduced the country to it's now tiny boundaries, and yet Brunei has become one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world.

Mod details

Leader-Bolkiah

Trait-"Darussalam"

"+2 gold from trade routes per source of oil worked by a city. Naval units have a 33% chance of being able to sell exotic goods when built."

Unique unit-"Sea Nomad"

"Replaces the Caravel, Lower combat strength, and less movement, but gains double movement along the coast and costs less. Can capture enemy ships"

unique improvement-Kampong Ayer

"Unlocked at compass, only buildable on flat land adjacent to the coast. 25% defense for any unit stationed on the tile, +1 food, +1 culture. +1 gold at navigation. Yields small amounts of gold when a cargo ship passes adjacent to it"

Strategy

Brunei is a true thalassocracy, i.e. a seapower that benefits greatly from trade and a good navy. With Brunei, you'll never be short of gold, settle along the coast and build lines of Kampong Ayer along key trade routes to generate lots of cash. The extra experience from the UA, and the cheap cost of the Sea Nomad means Brunei is by no means vulnerable either, guard your trade routes, or use your navy to secure new regions and let the money roll in!

Supports-Core JFD's cultural diversity, YNAEMP, RED units, Ethnic Units, CIV IV leader traits, unique cultural influence, piety and prestige.

Special thanks!

Finally got around to playing a full game as this civ, and I loved it. The UA itself wound up being pretty weak, but the UI and UU more than made up for it. The chance to be able to have naval units selll exotic goods once was a decent add-on for the UA, but the oil part was quite weak. It doesn't trigger until the late game, it's pure chance whether there is any oil in workable range of your cities at that point in the game, and trade routes in the late game are better used for domestic routes, since all the gold-related buildings alone produce plenty. So that part of the UA might warrant a change. The UU and UI though, were both incredible. Both are very multi-faceted and provide tons of value to the civ. Overall, the stellar UU and UI make this civ great despite a weak UA.

The color scheme shows up as bright pink and a odd yellow, definitly not a normal color scheme, it feels abit off compared to other colors in the game

I think you should switch the colour of the emblem around. the panji-panji bright red, and the background yellow. The current colour scheme just looks uncanny to me.

As a Bruneian, i am also a little bit skeptical about the some of the early history of Brunei. Btw, great work on this CIV! I am seriously impressed!

I'll edit the thing about the pepper plants.

Regarding Bolkiah's ancestry, I'm still a little bit skeptical of the claim considering in general early Bruneian history is sketchy and Islamised to an extent, but I'll change my wording to "apparently" rather than alleged.

Thanks alot for this information!

I jumped into the game and checked the updated civilopedia. I have no complaints on Bolkiah's page. However, the two new things added to the factoid, I would like to have some words on that.

1) The practice of planting pepper plants was only carried out during Bolkiah's rule. Any subsequent rulers after him did not continue this practice.

2) Bolkiah is the descendant of Sultan Sharif Ali (he was an arabian) and Sharif Ali is the direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through Hasan ibn Ali Saidina Hassan. (Wikipedia listed this in their page)

You can also check this website: (I know you might think it's unreliable but it has pretty much the same content as what I can find in government textbooks)

I'd didn't put too much consideration into making it a purely coastal tile, also CL's Malaysia has roughly the same unique component only with somewhat different abilities, and it is built on the coast.

Hey, it's me again! I wanna say that I really like the mod but there is one thing that's bugging me a little.. Why is the unique improvement (Kampong Ayer) built on land? And not on coast tiles? Is it because of script limitations or something else?
Also, a suggestion for a unique unit (for 3rd/4th unique components mod perhaps?), the Lantaka as a cannon unit replacer :). Perhaps with improved mobility/less strength and also a unique ability that gives +3 culture & +3 faith per turn when the unit is stationed in a city. (To reflect its widespread use for ceremonial and religious purposes)
I'm sorry in advance if I'm pushing it too far.

I will be sure to update the civ when I have time, thanks for your help!
