Finally got around to playing a full game as this civ, and I loved it. The UA itself wound up being pretty weak, but the UI and UU more than made up for it. The chance to be able to have naval units selll exotic goods once was a decent add-on for the UA, but the oil part was quite weak. It doesn't trigger until the late game, it's pure chance whether there is any oil in workable range of your cities at that point in the game, and trade routes in the late game are better used for domestic routes, since all the gold-related buildings alone produce plenty. So that part of the UA might warrant a change. The UU and UI though, were both incredible. Both are very multi-faceted and provide tons of value to the civ. Overall, the stellar UU and UI make this civ great despite a weak UA.

The color scheme shows up as bright pink and a odd yellow, definitly not a normal color scheme, it feels abit off compared to other colors in the game

I think you should switch the colour of the emblem around. the panji-panji bright red, and the background yellow. The current colour scheme just looks uncanny to me.

As a Bruneian, i am also a little bit skeptical about the some of the early history of Brunei. Btw, great work on this CIV! I am seriously impressed!

@FatherSausage

I'll edit the thing about the pepper plants.

Regarding Bolkiah's ancestry, I'm still a little bit skeptical of the claim considering in general early Bruneian history is sketchy and Islamised to an extent, but I'll change my wording to "apparently" rather than alleged.

Thanks alot for this information!

@ryanjames

I jumped into the game and checked the updated civilopedia. I have no complaints on Bolkiah's page. However, the two new things added to the factoid, I would like to have some words on that.

1) The practice of planting pepper plants was only carried out during Bolkiah's rule. Any subsequent rulers after him did not continue this practice.

2) Bolkiah is the descendant of Sultan Sharif Ali (he was an arabian) and Sharif Ali is the direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through Hasan ibn Ali Saidina Hassan. (Wikipedia listed this in their page)

You can also check this website: (I know you might think it's unreliable but it has pretty much the same content as what I can find in government textbooks)

I'd didn't put too much consideration into making it a purely coastal tile, also CL's Malaysia has roughly the same unique component only with somewhat different abilities, and it is built on the coast.
FatherSausage 25 Feb, 2016 @ 2:41am
@ryanjames

Hey, it's me again! I wanna say that I really like the mod but there is one thing that's bugging me a little.. Why is the unique improvement (Kampong Ayer) built on land? And not on coast tiles? Is it because of script limitations or something else?
Also, a suggestion for a unique unit (for 3rd/4th unique components mod perhaps?), the Lantaka as a cannon unit replacer :). Perhaps with improved mobility/less strength and also a unique ability that gives +3 culture & +3 faith per turn when the unit is stationed in a city. (To reflect its widespread use for ceremonial and religious purposes)
I'm sorry in advance if I'm pushing it too far.

@FatherSausage

I will be sure to update the civ when I have time, thanks for your help!

FatherSausage 19 Feb, 2016 @ 12:29am
@ryanjames

Continuation:

4) He was a direct decedent from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This is a fact not a hoax.

5) Last but not least, if you ask a well-educated bruneian, "Who is Sultan Bolkiah?" They would answer, "The fifth Sultan of Brunei." :)

Steam only allows 1000 character per comment. So, sorry about the multiple posts.
FatherSausage 19 Feb, 2016 @ 12:28am
@ryanjames

Continuation:

3) In Brunei, the tale of his death has become a very well-known legend (There are many versions of this). But one of the most popular version goes:
"It is said that Puteri Lela Menchanai appeared to Sultan Bolkiah from the ocean foam (she literally appearead in the middle of the ocean, covered in foam) while he was sailing around Sulu. Captivated by her beauty, he asked for her hand in marriage. While on another voyage, Lela Menchanai was sewing with a golden needle as Sultan Bolkiah laid down on her lap. Sultan Bolkiah fell asleep, causing her to panic and accidentally prick his hand with the needle. Unknown to her, the golden needle was poisonous, which in turn, killed the Sultan. Lela Mechanai regretting what she did, plunged into the sea and drowned a short while after."

@ryanjames

As per the civilopedia of Sultan Bolkiah, It seems alright. However, there are a few things you might have missed out; In Brunei, there is a general consensus about Bolkiah that:

1) He frequently travelling around the Malay archipelago for a few reasons:
(i) To gain new ideas to develop Brunei better (this is already mentioned in civilopedia)
(ii) To conquer new lands and expand Bruneian Empire
(iii) To spread Islam in conquered areas
(iv) To grow pepper plants in conquered areas (as to mark any newly obtained Brunei territory, similar to how some animals would leave claw marks on the bark of trees to mark their territory and warn others)

2) He is given the title of "Nakhoda Ragam" which translates into "Singing Captain" for his love of art, antiques and music.(If you google "Nakhoda Ragam" it won't really help you much because the name is widely used to name modern battleships. So pictures of battleships would appear instead)

@FatherSausage

Very strange, this is the page I am talking about

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sultans_of_Brunei

If you have anything you want me to add to the civilopedia about Bolkiah, feel free to tell me, I couldn't find much information on him and thus the civilopedia is rather scant.
FatherSausage 18 Feb, 2016 @ 5:19am
@ryanjames hmm that's odd. I grew up in Brunei and the country has a strict national philosophy (called Melayu Islam Beraja a.k.a MIB) which aims to teach all of Brunei's residents of the malayan (bruneian) culture and language, sunni islam and also history. In all of the government-approved history textbooks i've come across, they have always mentioned Sultan Bolkiah being the 5th Sultan of Brunei. Although, Brunei's history IS poorly documented and some of the Sultans may have been forgotten in history..
RJ  [author] 18 Feb, 2016 @ 4:33am
@FatherSausage

I've seen some conflicting sources regarding this, the Wikipedia page claims he is the 5th Sultan, but he appears to be the 6th on a chronological list of Sultans.
FatherSausage 16 Feb, 2016 @ 8:22pm
Would like to point out there is a minor mistake in the Civilopedia under Bolkiah's page (as well as during the LoadScreen); where it says Bolkiah is the sixth Sultan of Brunei (instead of fifth) :)

A very good mod. I like the Kampong Ayer.

Landoonini 6 Nov, 2015 @ 12:13pm
When ever i go to enable this mod which im pretty sure it does enable im not sure it doesn't work do you know why?
RJ  [author] 5 Oct, 2015 @ 10:09am
@Ya_Boy_Hank_Hill

Is it definitely installable when you load up the game, with the green tick?
Guy 4 Oct, 2015 @ 4:07am
it shows up in mods folder and i can click on it, but when i start a game he isnt in the civ menu?
dr earman 17 Sep, 2015 @ 6:40am
Okay. Did not know that. Thanks for letting me know.
RJ  [author] 17 Sep, 2015 @ 2:15am
@KingCodex

Yes, but it once controlled an Empire that covered the whole coastline of Borneo, parts of the modern phillipines/Indonesia and outlying islands.
dr earman 16 Sep, 2015 @ 6:02pm
@ryanjames It's a small sultinate on Borneo.
RJ  [author] 16 Sep, 2015 @ 12:56am
@KingCodex

I dunno, it's referred to as an Empire an awful lot.
dr earman 15 Sep, 2015 @ 8:01pm
I wouldn't count this as an empire, though. But cool to see new ideas to come up.
RJ  [author] 3 Sep, 2015 @ 1:57am
@TitoLounge

What mods are you using?
Tito Lounge 2 Sep, 2015 @ 8:06pm
@ryanjames
i posted it to my steam profile if you can see it there

i am using other mods and that is most likely the issue, but i wouldnt kow how to fix something like that.
RJ  [author] 1 Sep, 2015 @ 7:58am
@TitoLounge

You can try uploading the screenshot to imgur

What other mods are you using? It's possible there's a conflict and the game is using the spearman model as like a substitute.
Tito Lounge 30 Aug, 2015 @ 8:19pm
@ryanjames
btw i love this civ
Tito Lounge 30 Aug, 2015 @ 8:11pm
@ryanjames
It is a graphical glitch, sorry for the misleading message :c
I have a screenshot but i dont know how to post it

@Filthy_Russian_Stink_Serf
I got most of my info from the wikipedia pages "History of Brunei" and "Bruneian Empire", I got some of it's very "early history" from a site about the ancient legends of Brunei. Unfortunately their history is very poorly documented, and so my sources of info were rather rudimentary and limited, sorry.

@TitoLounge

Is this a graphical glitch? Or just an observation XD
Flagellation Nation 29 Aug, 2015 @ 10:14pm
Could you get me links to where you got the info about Brunei? After an extremely successful Europa Universalis 4 playthrough as them, I've been curious about Brunei's history (and Indonesian history in general). I just find it fascinating that a bunch of islands with dense jungles that were stereotypically inhabited by savage tribes became such a melting pot of cultures and religions.
Tito Lounge 29 Aug, 2015 @ 5:50pm
The sea nomads look like spearmen to me for some reason, but the Kampong ayers look fine.
RJ  [author] 29 Aug, 2015 @ 1:30pm
@ianandsue5

The Cumans, and I've two other civs in development atm, as well as a civ I'm making as a favour, if I did do the Mississippians then it would not be for a long while. Rest assured, I am interested in the civilisation however, and I'll only make a civ if I'm actually interested in the history ;)
RJ  [author] 29 Aug, 2015 @ 8:45am
@ianandsue5

Do you mean which civ am I releasing next, or what civs am I adding to my WIP list?
Techne 26 Aug, 2015 @ 7:12pm
This one is great fun to play, especially with mods that increase the number of trade routes available. Thanks for it.
RJ  [author] 26 Aug, 2015 @ 11:15am
And to all those who gave praise, thank you, it's much appreciated!
RJ  [author] 26 Aug, 2015 @ 11:15am
Oh, wow, alot of messages to deal with here!

@FatGuy1Pack

I may incorporate E and D at one point, or at least decisions.

@ianandsue5

Yeah, the Mississippians are quite a cool one, I may do it if/when I decide to do another North American civ

@axatoramus

I believe another modder has a Kurdish civ in the works

@hit me. hit me with your car!

Keeps prize ships, the nomad should technically retain the bonus as it upgrades to the Ironclad, which has the same bonus.

DJSHenninger  [author] 25 Aug, 2015 @ 7:44am
@FatGuy1Pack Events & Decisions can be used with this mod, but Brunei will not have any unique custom decisions or events.
FatGuy1Pack 25 Aug, 2015 @ 4:11am
hey man can the Events and Decisions mods be used with this one? Btw great job creating this i'll have fun playing this! Brunei Represent!

DJSHenninger  [author] 22 Aug, 2015 @ 5:08am
@shader301202 AFAIK, there's no active support for Community Balance Patch.
