Sonic the Hedgehog 1: Reordered

Description
Level Design and Stage Order modified to improve gameplay and overall flow.

Green Hill Zone heavily modified to remove overabundance of Spikes, better signposting of cliffs, more intuitive obstacles that prevent blind damage but can be circumvented with timing, and added variety to certain repeated elements.

Spring Yard Zone removal of most spiked balls so half pipes can be used to build up speed, vertical shafts with moving boxes heavily modified so each shaft is unique and has different mechanics, such as dropping through a shaft with rings and bumpers, and added a lower path to the end of act 3, as well as other minor changes.

Labyrinth Zone heavily modified to de-emphasize taking damage while incentivizing the player to spend more time under water getting rings, at the expense of drowning. Added spring to the end of Act 3 so Sonic doesn't have to drown if he misses the rising block.

Star Light Zone has been modified so high speed segments don't blindly send the player into pits.

Marble Zone has been moved to Zone 5 to improve the overall game flow and put Spring Yard earlier in the game. Also the long lava river ride in act 2 has been altered to allow for faster progression.

Scrap Brain Zone has been slightly modified so Rings hint at traps better. Act 3 is unaltered so that it's design feels more separate from Labyrinth Zone.

Press Start Button text on Title Screen has been restored and Level Order on Level Select Screen has been modified to match this stage order.

dlauv from gaf here,
you make the game far less tedious to get through, and the pacing adjusted by the simple movement of marble garden helps a lot. but also the adjustments in the levels themselves makes them play smoother. i won't say it's definitive, because sonic 1 has its fans for being designed the way it is, but it does make it easier to swallow for 2, 3&k fans. a fine hack.
