The XM1014 MechTech is primarily based on the BattleTech game franchise, most popular and recognized in the 80's. It was initially a boardgame, but eventually turned into the MechWarrior game franchise with it's own universe.
The patterns and color scheme used are reminiscent of paint on battle-worn 'Mechs. Intended to be a mil-spec.

Your foot hits something. It's a weapon of some sort. You pick the weapon up, dusting it off. Rubber tissue falls off. It's another weapon labelled "MechTech". "What the hell are these weapons?" you think to yourself. You quickly scan the weapon with your eyes, attempting to find any clues as to why, where or when it was made. Nothing, except a warning label. You drop the weapon, and are left with an uneasy feeling. You settle down for the night.
