Freespace: Evolution

Description
'Freespace: Evolution' aims to bring the frantic non-stop action of the original games to the tactical realm of a real-time-strategy game. Step out of your fighter cockpit and prepare to experience the world of Freespace from a completely different perspective.

All the classic and sometimes iconic ships such as the Orion or Lucifer will return once again to a computer screen near you. Take command and lead your fleets into battle, commander, for there can only be victory... or total extinction.

Freespace Evolution @ ModDB

Features
This is a standalone mod, meaning that you can't just play Nexus' original campaign or game modes with ships from Freespace - you need to run this mod seperately. It does offer plenty of new stuff, though:
  • 3 playable factions: Terrans, Vasudans and Shivans
  • 11 capital ships, 21 fighters and 13 bombers available to use
  • (hopefully) faithful recreation of the Freespace universe complete with fitting sounds and music
  • graphics assets based on the awesome Freespace Upgrade project
  • 4 simple missions to test out the mod
  • compatible with Nexus Skirmisher tool to create new skirmish battles

How to run it
Start Nexus through Steam as per usual, then select "Modifications" and then "standalone: Steam: Freespace: Evolution".

Now on Steam workshop
Since Nexus now officially supports Steam workshop (way to go, THQ Nordic!), I decided to upload my old Freespace-themed mod for the game. This is still the early, unfinished mod version that has been available on ModDB for quite a while now - so do not expect any new missions, ships or features. Development was pretty much halted back then and no new stuff has been added since then.

That being said, I did try to make sure that the mod works fine with the current version of the game and on the workshop itself. If you run into any issues with the mod, please do contact me (e.g. write a comment) - I'll see to assist and resolve anything that comes up.

Hello! I’m trying to adapt this beautiful mod to play MP with my buddy, if I was to succeed, could I post it on Workshop crediting you and linking your original mod? Thanks in Advance mate!

Sorry, there hasn't been any new development since 2010. The mod is available here as-is in its unfinished state, just as it says in the description. If anyone wants to develop custom missions or do skimirsh battles using the Nexus Skirmisher tool, then that's certainly possible. But there are no plans to resume development right now.

So is this mod ever going to get finished, or is it basically done at this point? I know Nexus will probably never see another update.

@Nimiria Nova:
The mod was never finished, but contains enough stuff to have fun for a short while, I think.

Fighters, bombers, cruisers and corvettes are all "finished" and functional in-game. The big destroyers (e.g. Orion, Hecate, Lucifer) are missing / not functional.

There is no campaign and only a few demo missions available. Nexus Skirmisher can be used to create some skirmish battles with the available units. Or if you're into mission scripting yourself, there's nothing holding you back from creating your own.

The download isn't huge. If you like Nexus and FreeSpace, it's worth a look, I think. But I'm biased, of course ^^

How finished is this mod? I would love to play full scale battles or campaigns :)

Thanks for getting back to me! I was eventually able to get a copy of Lightwave 11 and that does seem to do the trick :) I haven't had as much time to work on this recently but hoping I can finish the project at some point!

@ShotBot:
Sorry for answering so late. Haven't used Ligthwave in a long time, so I have no experience with issues with the newer versions. Lightwave 11 worked fine back then - if you can get access to a copy somehow.

I see they changed the file format for Lightwave 2018, went from LWO2 to LWO3. I don't know if it's still possible to export the files in the older LWO2 format - those should still work with Nexus. Lightwave 2015 seems to be the last version that used LWO2.

Other model formats are not supported by Nexus' converter. You might be able to use something like Blender and export to LWO2, but that probably won't support all the required features you need to set up a complex model. E.g. the hardpoints for weapons, engines, etc. I haven't tried it, though.

Hi there, amazing mod! Not sure if you are still around or active but I wanted to know if you could help with a modding / modeling question. I've been working on modding some ships and I've noticed that the current version of Lightwave is not fully compatible with Nexus TJI. It seems the newer .LWO file format does not play nice with this old game for things like engine nodes and UV textures.

I was able to locate a trial version of Lightwave 9.6 but being restricted to 400 points is a bummer. Do you know of a better way that works today?
