The mod was never finished, but contains enough stuff to have fun for a short while, I think.
Fighters, bombers, cruisers and corvettes are all "finished" and functional in-game. The big destroyers (e.g. Orion, Hecate, Lucifer) are missing / not functional.
There is no campaign and only a few demo missions available. Nexus Skirmisher can be used to create some skirmish battles with the available units. Or if you're into mission scripting yourself, there's nothing holding you back from creating your own.
The download isn't huge. If you like Nexus and FreeSpace, it's worth a look, I think. But I'm biased, of course ^^
Sorry for answering so late. Haven't used Ligthwave in a long time, so I have no experience with issues with the newer versions. Lightwave 11 worked fine back then - if you can get access to a copy somehow.
I see they changed the file format for Lightwave 2018, went from LWO2 to LWO3. I don't know if it's still possible to export the files in the older LWO2 format - those should still work with Nexus. Lightwave 2015 seems to be the last version that used LWO2.
Other model formats are not supported by Nexus' converter. You might be able to use something like Blender and export to LWO2, but that probably won't support all the required features you need to set up a complex model. E.g. the hardpoints for weapons, engines, etc. I haven't tried it, though.
I was able to locate a trial version of Lightwave 9.6 but being restricted to 400 points is a bummer. Do you know of a better way that works today?
For the Skirmisher to work, you might have to copy the mod from Steam's workshop folder to the game's own mods folder, though.
