*** TEMPORARILY BROKEN BY 0.5 *** Chess Set & Medieval Chess Pieces

Description
**** UPDATE May 10, 2017: NOT working in 0.5. This mod uses so many different features, will probably take a lot of time to figure out what broke. I will try to fix, once I have gotten higher-priority things all set. ****

*** UPDATE Jan 10, 2017: Survival Ready & Gated by its own specific Research branch! See below for details on crafting the chess pieces. Plus there is also a Chess Instructions scroll you can craft and read in-game. ***

Hi all!

This latest mod is a playable chess set using scans of some of the famous 12th Century "Lewis Chessmen" as playing pieces.

The mod comes complete with everything you need to create a chess match in your world:

-- 8x8 Chess table, can be locked into the ground or onto a table/floor
-- White king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn
-- Red king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn

The pieces come from scans* of 6 of the actual Lewis chessmen that are currently at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh: http://www.nms.ac.uk/lewischessmen.aspx. They date from about AD 1150, and were discovered on a shoreline in the Scottish Isles in the 1800s. So you can play with real history here.

You can lock the pieces to the table or place them dynamically.

This mod is now SURVIVAL READY and accessible through research. This is a high-end set fit for royalty, so it will require high-end materials and some work to create. The real pieces are made of bone, so I'm doing that in the game too. You must kill deer and collect meat. You can craft the meat into "Worked Bone" at a crafting table, and then plant the bone in ploughed soil to let it bleach in the sun. After 30 minutes you will get "Whitened Bone," which you can then craft into the chess pieces. The mod includes an Instruction scroll you can read to remember the steps.

I hope you have fun with this!

* Original high-poly scans here: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/the-lewis-chessmen-at-the-national-museum-of-scotland-20752

** KNOWN ISSUE: Worked Bone and Instruction scrolls can't be dropped from inventory onto the ground. To get rid of them, I made it so you can use them as fuel in bonfires and furnaces. If you have worked bone or instructions you don't need, just use them like wooden sticks/branches, and they'll be consumed and disappear from your world

This mod is sponsered by the Age of Empires II intro video...

Haha it's true @MrBoomBastic! The whole set is like that in real life. The figures all look grumpy or sad or bored. They crack me up.

Thanks much Concomitant! Soon I'll be able to put this into Survival too. The chess pieces can stack in inventory now, you can carry a full 32-piece set in just one slot. (The table would take up a 2nd slot.)

Anyone who's thinking about maybe downloading this mod—It works as intended and will be a great addition to your world.

Great job, STORI3D PAST Productions!

Hey Blastmetal, yeah a couple other people noticed that too. I had never played AOE2 before, but I've watched the video & love it. I think you're right. It looks like they used at least some of the Lewis chessmen as their inspiration for that intro too. It's really cool seeing & using actual 1000-year-old objects in a game world.

This reminds me a lot of the chess pieces used in age of empires 2 age of kings intro.

Sweet I'm glad you like idea. Figured it might make it easier to be playable. Also seen life size pieces in a couple movies. Looked really cool. Even if you don't get to it, this is a very awesome mod. It looks great in my tavern ;)

Thank you much Blackout & Saviliana! Yeah, it's funny. I had never played AOE2 before, but I've watched the Intro now and I love it. Wolfgar, that's a terrific idea! I'm juuuust noodling the idea of making these animated & movable too. I don't know exactly what's possible yet. But it may be possible to push them forward a block, and then rotate them in a new direction so they can be pushed in that new direction too. It would be so cool to have a life-size set in a garden that can be moved like that.
