Oxidize!

So this weapon skin is heavily inspired by the modern pirates in Africa. After seeing a certain movie 1.5 years ago I wanted to make this weapon skin happen and now I finally did! The third person images you can see are made with the pirate models from CS:GO and damn it's a perfect fit! This weapon was heavily requested. The AK-47 is one of the most iconic weapon in CS:GO and to be quite honest, one of the harder ones to make skins for. No it's not the layout of the UV Island that makes it harder than other weapons, that's even easier since it's pretty well unwrapped. No the actual geometry of the weapon is quite a pickle when creating weapon skins. Even though it was pretty tough that does not mean that I have given up. After a lot of ideas and discarded drawings I finally landed on a general look that I was happy with and I hope you guys like it aswell. I present, the AK-47 Oxidize.

Work Progress

I started of the same way that I do with most of my weapons and that is a general in layout with colours. I define what parts I want to have a really rusted look and what parts I don't want to have a rusted look. This way I have a nice overview before applying rust and I get a general sense of how it will turn out. This generally looks something like this:

After I was done with the layout I applied the rust in the normal way. Then there was this wood. Sure I could just make the standard wood darker and browner to fit in with the rust but c'mon, I could make my own wood texture in Substance Designer and have a much more awesome result! So I did create my own wood texture in Substance Designer and then imported it in photoshop. In photoshop I altered the brightness and contrast to nicely fit in with the rust. Then I started adding wear, and I mean LOTS of wear. Scratches, general dirt and much more in a variety of layers to give it the final look you can see in the images. I myself am super happy with the end result and I hope you are too.

As I mentioned earlier the AK-47 is a pretty hard weapon in terms of projection of drawings. I always try to keep the default view in mind and create my designs according to that view. The issue is that with larger drawings that are not really wide it will look distorted from the default perspective which I personally really really really dislike. After some brainstorming I came to the conclusion that I would keep the top of the AK-47, the rounded part, clear from drawings on the side since there was too much distortion going on.

For the rest of the gun I ofcourse added some white paint to really give it that worn, used gun. With the all the symbols and stuff written on the AK-47 I aim at giving users the ability to generate their own story to the gun. The iconic smiley is right in front of you when you're holding the weapon. Besides that there are plenty of symbols and stuff written across the weapon for you to explore, some might be hard to see ;)

Wear Progress

I remember from the AK-47 Elite Build that a high float value is worth more than a general battle-scarred because it turns into a rather general AK-47 with rubber grips instead of wood. This is why I opted for a full on 1.00 max wear to replicate the same effect. The AK-47 Oxidize when worn above 0.80 starts looking like a normal AK-47 with custom wooden grips that I hope some will love. In terms of factory new differences there is a small spot on the main body that will start wearing at 0.00. For minimal wear there will be appearing scratching around the edges of the weapon skins and the weapon really starts wearing at the field-tested float value of 0.20

Last Words

Thank you for taking the time to read through my rather long description. I sincerely hope you like this weapon skin because I had a lot of fun making it. This weapon is aimed at the lower rarities hence it's not super duper colourful and all up in your face. Stickers are no problem for this skin since most of the stickers won't cover up any art :)

If you like this weapon or would like to see it in the game please leave a yes vote, this would help me a lot! I am currently working on a lot more Oxidized skins and if everything goes to plan I hope to upload the UMP-45 Oxide Blaze next week so keep your eyes out for that! Once again, thank you!
