You can also play as a mothership craft and heal your own fleet to keep them going. Its just the playstyle :0
But I have found some issues, one is that it appears their ships have little to no a.i. (they rarely move, even when attacked). Their stations do not seem to build anything. And lastly, I am not sure if this was intentional or not, but very little if any resources spawn in their territory (This makes the early game pretty brutal).
Have you explored the whole galaxy or did you most literally do the reveal command and not find them at all.
