The following is taken from a guidebook from 2017

"The island as a whole is a low-lying dry place with few fresh water sources. The northern part of it is a sparsely inhabited area with only a few villages and some small farms. Through the millennia the wind has worn down the exposed rocks and carried fragments to the sea. If you follow the western coast south you find the impressing Mwamba wa Wafalme or rock of Kings, a massive hill with exposed stone faces. Here one of the islands few fresh water sources could be found. Legends surround this place and talk about caves and hidden treasures. Which is not impossible since bandits and robbers have always used the area to get away from persecutors. South of Mwamba wa Wafalme is a slightly more fertile area where the population has been able to survive on agriculture and a number of larger villages have emerged. Here you will also find one of Wamako's many military bases from the Cold War. The southernmost part of the island is a more hilly part but just like the northernmost parts there are few settlements. But we highly recommend a visit to the palace ruins at Nyumba Kubwa from the 13th century(But only of you like rocks and ruins). On the western part you will notice the gigantic runway on the local airbase built by the US to be used as a emergency runway for the space shuttels durring the 80s.(Still Alpha dont try to land here.) Here you also find the village of Naribi, this was a dusty village untill the 20s when the french colonial administation decided to make it its seat on the island. The influx of money from the United States in the late 1970s during the construction of the air base is still possible to see. This is probably the most well-preserved part of Wamako's colonial heritage. And the checkered street pattern that was drawn up in the 1920s can still be seen in the central parts of the city. In the southern part of town you find the gated community were the islands more well do citizens have there homes."
