That sort of thing will likely hold off a full stack, especially if you don't autoresolve.
I'm not saying this because of the challenge to the player; I don't care if they find it hard. The problem really is that anything short of powerhouse AI can't take any provinces, because the base castle becomes too strong. So AI throws away half to full stacks (and notable historical figures) trying to take castles it *thinks* are weak because the AI doesn't know you buffed the garrisons.
It ended up detracting from the gameplay for me - so now I don't even play with my own garrison mod. It just got to be too much. Unless you can figure out a way to mod the AI to warn it that undefended castles are really dangerous...

I'd done something very similar to this mod already, by setting the castle garrisons to a static value and adding garrison troops to the dojos. I didn't carry it forward to RotS, though.
Without making castle garrisons static, you are going to end up with full stacks spawning in the high level AI castles. The AI loves to upgrade castles. Take a level 4 castle, not unusual to see in the AI's home province. This has 4 building slots, and knowing the AI that's going to be some stupid mix like Sword School, Foot Archery Range, Stable and Rice Exchange. So the garrison will be:
1 Onna Bushi
2 Bow Samurai
1 Katana Samurai
1 Yari Samurai
1 Samurai Retainer
2 Yari Ashigaru
PLUS
2 Yari Ashigaru (Yari Dojo)
2 Bow Ashigaru (Bow Dojo)
2 Yari Ashigaru (Stable)
I see what you are saying. I do have to ask though, will you include economic buildings that add garrison units? (Then again FotS didn't do that either so I can also see you not doing that as well in this mod)
One of the main intentions of this mod is, to boost the AI, because the AI builds alot of Dojos.
And the "similar" mod which adds garrisons to economy buildings + static garrisons isn't very similar at all, since it boosts less the AI, but the player. Because player build alot more "Money" provinces with economy buildings then Dojo provinces. They use 2 or 3 provinces to recruit and the rest to get money. The static castle garrison weakens the AI further. Because the AI is most of the time faster to upgrade castles (or starts with bigger ones in some provinces)
Well it's a double edged sword. The AI get the same garrisons you do. Now instead of easy castle wins, esp in the beginning, the player is going to take more losses. Also another modder out there already created a mod similar to this, but (s)he also added in soldiers for the economic buildings + a static castle garrison mod so that castle garrisons do not become too powerful.
