For anyone still working on reworking this character pool; don't forget to make a new type of soldier, a "GI Joe" or "Joe" something; this "GI Joe" should now have to be picked where you pick "soldier", "templar", "skirmisher", as well as various alien soldiers if you have the mod "Allies Unknown". Now make all the classes that are the Joes exclusive to this new type of soldier and voila; random rookies can't suddenly become a Joe character.

I've been rebuilding the character pool using the RPGO mod for the classes and a myriad of armor,clothing and weapon mods.

So far I have Snake Eyes, Duke, Doc, Scarlett, Cover Girl, Jinx, Mainframe, Blowtorch, Barbecue, Charbroil, Sci-Fi, and Dusty done and I'm currently working on others.

I just read @The_Man_In_The_Shack last post from 2021. This is all abandoned and not working. I wish I could have seen that before I just broke my head for two days trying to get this to work. My heart is completely broken right now. I never knew this existed or I would have been playing this hard during covid lock downs.

This is a project worth being picked up by someone out there. Rest in Freedom, G.I. Joe for WOTC.

I just installed all the mods, but I dont understand the instructions or lack of.

"just import the pool and start a new game"

What does import the pool mean? What pool? Where is this pool?

"If you've never used the Starting Soldiers mod, you'll probably want to go and modify the XCOMStartingSoldiers.ini file in THAT mod"

Where is this file? And what do I modify?

the crashing issue doesn't seem to be because of too many mods, the issue i have been having is that any character that starts on the main screen that uses the "XOF in War of the Chosen" mod clothing will crash on any attempt to load a save or new game. if the main screen is a character that doesn't use that mod, it will always load fine

Oh man! You're back! I was worried you weren't playing XCOM anymore. Please, please re-develop the mod and make it easier. It took a lot of effort but I managed to make one heck of a campaign out of it.

Hello fine people, this is actually the first time I've logged in for quite a while - unfortunately due to a large number of changes in the way background stuff works, this mod should be considered obsolete. I've fiddled with the core of it on my end some, and I've been able to re-make the models work, but I'll need to repackage it as a new mod. Life is pretty busy this day, but it's not impossible that I can do this. Of course, they just said this week that WOTC will be developing a GI Joe game, so hopefully we won't even need this after a while! :)

@Robby, I actually found that hat too when I was messing around.

The character pool isn't working. For some reason I didn't get any of them, I got no greenshirts and the starting roster is just a gigantic cluster of random geeks that I now have to manage or turn into the Joe matching their class. This is supposed to be easier, right?

How do I get it to prioritize Hawk, Scarlet, Snake-Eyes and Stalker? I just keep getting 4 randos. Including Cobra people. My last load had freaking Serpentor.

Alright only way i got it to work was going to work was going to {LINK REMOVED}. I had to download the rar and take the bin in that file and put it in my bin file location. I had to do the first mission without them . When i got base i just went and recruited some.

Is this mod still working? I dont have any of the ini or bin files listed. I have gi joe code names as classes but cannot find any character pool or uniforms to import.

Hi liquidravens - sorry, I've been away from this for a while, and it's likely that the RPG stuff would need to be revised. It should be easy enough though to just use the character models; just go into the mod folder on your drive and remove the .ini files that it's talking about above. The .bin file, which I believe is in a folder called character pool or something like that, is all you actually need, and then just keep the cosmetic mods. Hope it works for you! :)

I've tried for 6 hours to get the character pool to show up, with no luck. When I move the Bin file physically to the character pool the only Joe I get is "Breaker". Not sure what I did wrong as I have no other mods but the ones listed and the GI Joe pool... Very sad and disappointed.

Is there any way to set Cobra as the enemy AI? Instead of seeing a Sectoid I'd see a Cobra Trooper, for example?

Holy shit! I've been gone for the better part of a month so I just saw this note, and haven't really been able to look at this stuff since the beginning of Q4. Work will calm down after a couple more weeks, and I should be able to concentrate enough to pick back up after that.

Did you see this new mod?! Jet packs! Actual Jet packs! So Grand Slam is set and since it offers dynamic deployment on the field (not sure how this works) the sky patrol or any others could be sent into battle later in a mission.

this took awhile to make it correct...but man is it cool to see the gi-joe's I grew up lovin in a game like this! I hope one day it can be updated to add even more specialization!

Oh man, what a game changer that would be! I've pulled down that mod and (when I can) I am going to look into it to see if we can make it work for us somehow. With all these new powers available though, I think I need to get back into the custom classes and sort those things out...and I've got other characters waiting in the wings too. It'll honestly probably be a couple of months just given my schedule, but it seems like there's a lot we can still do here!

How do you mean, asset limitations with Beachhead? He can be recreated almost to a dot?

@The_Man have you seen this Advent into Galactic Empire mod? I wonder how hard would it be to change them into different Cobra troopers and Vipers.

I disabled the Joes Ini and it works fine. The lack of custom classes kinda sucks but its worth it for the variety and balence. The base RPG is too broken.

I made a couple additional characters; theyre not great due to the asset limitations (similar to beach head) but they are sufficient. Not sure how to share but if you are interested let me know...So far, Sgt. Slaugher, Mercer, Taurus and Big Lob.

@mictator - thanks! That is a very cool idea, but I don't think it can work that way because I believe the actual characters are conglomerations of a set of components, which are assembled in-game. The actual components can be altered, and I suppose anything could be brought in - that's how all the cosmetic mods work - but I've never heard of anything holding an assembled character.

@Champion - thanks for pointing that out! I've been away from it for a couple months and didn't know that got added. You're exactly right about how to change it - the only thing the custom classes are really doing anyway is locking the 'trait' powers; otherwise they are just a regular RPGO 'soldier'. If you were to go into the config, you could actually add these powers straight to the custom classes, like the existing ones are - when I can get some time I'll update the official one to use these, but there's nothing technically preventing it from working even now.

The new specializations aren't accessible to the pre-made Joes. Any way to allow this? Is it just simply changing their Solider type from the custom one to "solider" or "rookie"?

I'm loving the mod. Thank you so much. So maybe a stupid question, but do any of the characters (like Doc or Lifeline) get any healing abilities? I'm still early in campaign, so not sure what abilities/traits are but I would love if they had ability to heal through gremlin. Maybe similar to the healing of the Specialist from vanilla.

Actually i spoke too soon, i got the character pool and imported the characters and made character pool use "character pool only" and stared a couple new games to test and the joes just don't show up as my characters :(

@The_Man_In_The_Shack I se what you mean Ill try it that way next time. I did nothing the 1st time and nothing happened. The pool didnt show up or the starting list obviously. So I just copied the pool file to the doc folder and did the starting soliders list from your set up and moved it to the starting soldiers folder and it works like a charm. Loving the mod so far. Brings back so many memories of when I was a kid watching the cartoon. Thanks!

@Vash - You can do that, or what I do in my own system is I've actually commented off the stuff that's in the regular StartingSoldiers config, and then it reads the one in my mod afterward...so that mod builds the system for this to work in, but is just 'blank' as far as the list goes, and then mine adds on to it to fill in the list, basically. Theoretically, this method could be used to swap out many lists in turn, just by activating or deactivating different mods. That's moot for me, because this is the only way I play it, but it's a workable pattern.

(sorry for the delay, been concentrating on work)...okay, so regular things work, and the file is there.. Have you messed around with the Character Pool like that in other ways before/made your own sets? That all works okay?

Kind of a hacky solution maybe....I don't know a ton about where it's trying to look for stuff under the hood, but I am pretty sure that there's like a secondary place where it keeps the .bin files that you may have saved yourself...it's in a different place than the mods, mine was in my user directory somewhere. I know that if you copy one of those .bin files into that place, it should show up alongside yours when you go to import...I don't think that would solve the class thing if it's just somehow not recognizing the mod, but it would get you the models, which is the real meat.

Okay cool...next step, when you look in the directory where it puts the downloaded mod stuff, which should be here (wherever your SteamLibrary is on your system):
<YOUR PATH>\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\1328334314\Character Pool

...do you see a file called 'GI Joe - WOTC Joes.bin'? If you've got the mod on, it should technically only need that file to work in its basic form. If that piece were missing, it would definitely also make this not show up...

I have been running war of the chosen with tons of mods with no problems, actually the game still runs with all the mods with no problems. The only issue is that gijoe character pool simply does not show up anywhere.
