You're zeroing the whole model, I assume?
Only zero the rootTransform and bip_head, it won't look 'wonky' then.
I found one issue, and that is that if you lock it to a character, and then zero it onto their head, the whole top (rotor, handles, blades, etc) moves to a weird location, and it clips with the head. The only way to get around this is to select Body and zero only that, not the Unknown part.
