switching operations

Gotta say, this is one of my favorite layouts to run. I often leave a long coal drag circling the main while I switch some of the industries out with a small local freight. makes one heck of a challenge. Now if only we had waybills and such for extra fun!

I dunno how easy it would be, but you can add required dlc/items to your workshop submission.

I will look into it, but I have over 100. I've downloaded most (if not all) of the realistic looking liveries.

I there an easy way to do this?
TheGibster 20 Aug, 2018 @ 3:13pm
Would you mind adding a list/links to the liveries you used on this layout?

staging for the hoppers for the mine. I'm thinking of running off the lumber area beside the lake to get to the large layout enventually.

So is the siding heading towards the main layout room going to be where the extension is to the current layout or is it just staging for the hoppers there at the mine?

Update 1.03
-added some track to help operations and switching
-added details.

Will be playing on the layout to see where I go from here.

We would be able to put them on the facia for town names, etc, and well anything else I guess. I also suggested a horizontal one. That one would mainly be for siding names though. You could put it inbetween the track because of the scaling feature which would be nice and super useful.

Yeah a lumber mill might be a great thing to add btw. I REALLY wish they would add editable signs, which is also something I suggested.

There's a few of these problems I only notice once I start actually playing on my layout vs building. It's easy to forget when you just adding scenery and laying track.

My goal is to have a practical layout for operations.
Petrov  [author] 3 Aug, 2018 @ 5:25pm
yup, already done on my end ;)
Nick B.[US] 3 Aug, 2018 @ 4:50pm
It was a pretty easy fix btw
Petrov  [author] 3 Aug, 2018 @ 4:10pm
Thanks. I will take note and fix that area.

Yes I have the latest version. Yeah that yard to me is, well, the actual layout's main yard and not a staging one. I don't know if I will change the trackplan of the staging yard I currently have either. The one part of the mainline you do need to change is that squeezed point over by the coal mine and forestry. The 2 mains are too close together there and 2 trains can't pass each other without clipping a bit because of that.
Petrov  [author] 2 Aug, 2018 @ 7:22pm
Thanks. Do you have the latest version with the larger yard (1.02)? It can be used for a staging yard. I've been working on little things and adding some track to enhance operations and just a few common sense things. Probably will update this weekend.

Good idea though. I may just put in a simple staging yard in the small room to store all the rolling stock. So many good ones in the workshop.

This is an amazing layout to operate on! I can't wait till they release multiplayer, this will be a great one for that. I added a staging yard in the small room with the 4x8 table. It made a huge difference in operations having that because you have a place to store many more pieces of rolling stock for later use or to swap out loaded and unloaded cars. I don't know if you guys will have one in the future once the new expansion is finished but I highly suggest you put one in officially.

Update 1.02. See notes above.

Will be working on adding detail and fine tuning things next.
Petrov  [author] 12 Jul, 2018 @ 4:39pm
Thanks. I haven't been using the headlights much, so it must be the high number of details. I will have to keep that in mind when expanding. Utilizing the least amount of details but making it look great as well.

Shadows and post processing plays a big part with all these details on the layout.

My PC is starting to get dated a bit so could just be that. It's been super hot here and the PC needs a good clean, so there's another reason.

biggest performance hit is definitely having train headlights on, but if all your trains have the lights off then it should be fine. Other than that its generally just detail density. also keep in mind that turning off editable details/track/scenery significantly changes performance (all are off by default when you load a save though, so people playing the layout don't have to worry about it)
Petrov  [author] 12 Jul, 2018 @ 2:09pm
working to expand the interchange tracks into the next room. Maybe a large staging yard? Ideas on how to focus on model RR operations?
Petrov  [author] 12 Jul, 2018 @ 6:38am
minor update 1.01 . See notes above.
Petrov  [author] 12 Jul, 2018 @ 5:09am
Thanks! I tried to detail as much as possible but also keep the yards and industries as functional as I can.

The only thing I need to understand is the performace side of a detailed map. On max settings, it does lower in FPS in the middle section. What are the biggest perfomance hits in the game? Seems shadows, but I like them on.

I will update with a few fixes and details soon.

This is a really detailed and well made map, solid work! I posted about it on Twitter
