As for the short pikes is nice to hear so I'll try rebalancing the spike damage in order to fit the mod.
Formed Attack units have a hidden buff as cavalry_counter_tactics that mitigates the formed attack thing and also gives a feel for the formation. Sadly the AI can't use the phalanx properly, but like this you'll still get a good line of battle with able hoplites. It's not ideal but I personally like it better like this.

especially the duels they make me feel like Im watching 300 or gladiator I just find them immersive
You will see an amazing improvement in your phalanxes deadliness as you get buffs from the army traditions and general, the best one you can get is weapon damage.
just some tips for you guys trying to understand the main focus of the mod.
pike formation melee defense from 0.75 mult to 0.70 mult
walk speed increased overall from 1.5 to 1.8 and heavys running speed from 2 to 2.2
Melee defense from 1 mult to 0.75 mult and I added a -8 morale also. This changes should be more noticeable when a pike unit is attacked from the back and/or flanks.
They will still be strong on the front, though against really good units they will loose more 1v1s
With the last update I feel pretty good with the state of the mod so expect less frequent updates
