You're correct, least in West Africa they did not use Elephants in war, i'm guessing this was added mainly coz it's kind of cool? Which is fine. What is missing here though is a light cav version retinue. They also didn't use camel cavalry in West Africa, it was basically, elite cavalry plus archers, and guys with spears. So maybe the author replace the camel cavalry with a light cav retinue with pikes.

Hey, handy mod for a mali play, thought i'd mention that ingame the names are mixed up, the retinue with war elephants is called Camel Caravan and the one with Camels is called Elephant Caravan
