Ok, so mods are ruled out.

Next thing to check: are you flying it with Atmo only, or with hydrogen and atmo thrusters working together?

I don't think it will fly as-is without using the hydorgen thrusters too.
The thrusters are supposed to cut down on the fuel cost rather than completely take over for the hydrogen thrusters.

I'm doing the official servers so I'm not able to use scripts or mods. Not sure if that changes anything. I had to put additional atmo thrusters around the front/middle of the ship to allow it to fly directly up.

Hi Frank,

I'm not sure what "front heavy" means in this context?
The centre of mass for the ship is a little forward, (I think its aligned with the front of the braking atmo thrusters), but that should not be a problem in a game where thruster force is applied through the centre of mass of the grid, and it should fly just fine with a full cargo, if a bit slow to gain altitude. It has been a while since I tested it, but I make sure that each ship with an "AC" in the designation should be able to fly with cargo full of steel plate (the heaviest component) in Earthlike or Alien gravity.

I have seen a few mods that do change this, for example, once where thrust is applied from the actual thruster position instead of centre of mass, are you perhaps using something like that?

Ship is a little front heavy when trying to fly in earth-like.

Hi Frank,

Nope, it definitely won't fit the small ship printer, but it is still "printable" with a larger welder wall and a few more pistons.
Frank 4 Nov, 2024 @ 12:52pm
I'm guessing you can't use the ship printer for this bad boy

You're also welcome to upload a modified version if you like (but please link the original)
Spite  [author] 3 Feb, 2023 @ 12:18am
Thanks, yeah unfortunately some time IRL takes priority over ISL.

Maybe 2023 is the year for SE though (I hope!)
EmberStar 2 Feb, 2023 @ 8:26am
Okay. Thank you for the reply, and I understand. Yesterday was the first time I'd even opened the game in months, sometimes other stuff just takes priority. I hope you're doing well, and having fun.
Spite  [author] 2 Feb, 2023 @ 6:28am
Hi EmberStar,

Yes I've noticed that issue, but haven't taken the time to open it up and see where some could be squeezed in.

I'm not sure if the author is still around. If so, is there any chance of updating the design to add atmospheric side thrusters? This is actually a really nice starting cargo shuttle, especially for starting on a planet. The atmospheric thrusters would make it possible to move it from wherever it's being constructed to a fueling station. It's not a massive deal to add them by hand, just a question of either hacking out the rearmost sideways hydrogen thrusters (as described below) or messing up the look a bit by gluing them on more or less on top of the hydrogen tanks.

Thanks! the Kogia is definitely a favorite of mine too :D . . . If Only I could sneak in a jumpdrive somewhere on it

my guy, this shuttle rocks. From hauling resources to orbit or prospecting, to AFK interplanetary shuttle rides, i use this ship for E V E R Y T H I N G.

on servers, it's a dream. Solo, it's a workhorse. It's sleek. It's lovely. You knocked it out the park on this one, kudos good sir

Hi there Rayanth, this is also quite an old design, the original idea was to make a hydrogen only large grid shuttle, but then I added in atmo thrusters to save a bit of hydrogen, I guess I didnt notice it was missing side atmos, or they were accidentally removed in one of my updates, I'll see about sneaking them in somewhere, like you did.
Rayanth 13 Jul, 2020 @ 5:46pm
(sorry, not replacing the aftmost side thrusters, replacing the aft of the pair that are about 8 blocks forward from the tail end)
Rayanth 13 Jul, 2020 @ 5:44pm
I wrecked my first (ISL) Atlas recently, and that was my workhorse for getting from Earth to our asteroid base just outside Earth's gravity well. I had previously overlooked the Kogia because of the smaller number (mass) in the name, but today i realized it's a large grid, so that number is actually in 1000kg's, not 100kg's !

Just finished building it and detached it from the merge block and it started drifting to the side all on its own. That's when I noticed there's no atmospheric side thrusters. I am replacing the aftmost hydrogen side thrusters with atmospherics, I'm just curious why they were left out? Is the Kogia capable of reaching its mass rating in atmosphere on atmospherics only or will i require the hydrogens even to move heavy cargos between bases on Earthlike?

I don't mind using them if I have to, as we have an ice lake undergoing open-pit mining to stockpile ice and hydrogen, just hoping I won't have to stop by there except to top up for a flight up to space.
Alterae 25 May, 2019 @ 2:46pm
I will make sure to do that.
Spite  [author] 25 May, 2019 @ 2:01pm
also, would you mind including a link to this one in your upload? (sounds like good advertising to me :D )
Alterae 25 May, 2019 @ 1:51pm
Absolutely.
Thanks a bunch.
Spite  [author] 25 May, 2019 @ 1:45pm
Yeah of course! but please let me know so I can have a look too :steamhappy:
Alterae 25 May, 2019 @ 12:56pm
Awesome!
Hey, I'd like to retrofit this ship a little for personal/faction use, which will almost certainly involve uploading the modified version to the workshop.

Do I have your permission to do that?
Spite  [author] 25 May, 2019 @ 10:53am
yeah, that's what the camera in the front is for, I was trying to go as small as possible, so ran out of space. next one will have a big enough cockpit for a window and the LCDs :)
Alterae 25 May, 2019 @ 10:49am
Just tested the ship out. Nice and maneuverable, and the interior is great.
My only issue is you can't see out the front of the cockpit thanks to the SAM screen.
Alterae 24 May, 2019 @ 4:17pm
Awesome. Thanks for the tip!
Spite  [author] 24 May, 2019 @ 12:40am
Its the new Fancy Flight info, if you want a similar readout on your ships, load up the script and copy the custom data from the Kogia's flight seat. It's super easy to change and very customizable :D
Alterae 23 May, 2019 @ 3:27pm
Oh wait, is that a blargmode script? I didn't even notice! Now I'll definitely have to check it out.
Spite  [author] 21 May, 2019 @ 10:41pm
Thanks, Blargmode made a really cool script, I couldn't resist playing with it! :steamhappy:
Alterae 21 May, 2019 @ 3:12pm
Looks great! Nice use of a custom script in the pilot's seat as well.
I also appreciate the toilet. Toilets make life in space sooo much easier.
