Super fun maps to play with, but I feel like it was such a missed opportunity to not have Egypt start in Cairo, IL, lol

Thanks, kepparezou!
kepparezou 5 Jul, 2023 @ 4:12pm
After you've updated the file for Mesa Verde (and/or other city states, in similar fashion), then launch Civ6. create a new game, load the database, then move forward with creating your game. I think I had to change the city state options such that I manually selected each city state with TSL, but didn't necessarily select 'only civs with tsl allowed'. Anyway, not sure where exactly your attempt didn't succeed, but if you see this, give it another shot, and let me know if you get it to work. Good luck!
kepparezou 5 Jul, 2023 @ 4:09pm
@FelipeDos Sorry not to see this sooner. I can help. :) You'll first need to locate and open the "_Text" file within the city state's folder structure, and note how the city state is specifically identified in the code there. Using Mesa Verde as an example, it looks to be the following: GEDEMO_CIVILIZATION_MESAVERDE. Then, open the map.xml file, and add your line for the city state's location. I added them at Cortez, Colorado in the CONUS Western map; here's my sample code: <Replace MapName="CONUSwest" Civilization="GEDEMO_CIVILIZATION_MESAVERDE" X="30" Y="45" /> <!-- Cortez, Colo. -->
FelipeDos 16 Feb, 2023 @ 7:50pm
I've been trying to add TSL for a few of Gedemo's native tribe city-states, like Coosa and Mesa Verde and its not working. Anyone have an idea as to the problem? I've tried adding them to the Map.xml in this mod, I've tried in the city-state mod folder itself, and I've tried doing it in the custom.xml in Ynamp. They show up in the list of available city states during setup, even when 'only civs with tsl allowed' is selected, but then when you load in they don't spawn.

ah goodie time to start my fallout playthrough via civ XD

Idea: if you can put Vietnam in Texas, because California is Chinese.
Iojima 9 Nov, 2021 @ 5:46pm
Hey quick question: Why'd you put Ethiopia in Atlanta when Georgia was also there
also idea: Mahajapit in Havana, just given I can't think of literally anywhere else that such a naval civ would work
anyway have a good day
cozmicclockwork 12 Oct, 2021 @ 7:28pm
I was wondering if you could do something to the structure of the Northern forests in Canada and the US, particularly around the Northwest great lakes. I know wildfires can get pretty ridiculous on large maps with unbroken forests but I actually think the small holes or winding forests are making it worse, as fires self-perpetuate themselves since they are broken up but still connected. I think filling in holes in the trees or breaking up these larger clusters of forests could help keep them from getting out of hand. I'm in a game right now and There's been ton's of fires in Northern Wisconsin/Minnesota and the upper Michigan peninsula
kepparezou 1 Apr, 2021 @ 5:38pm
@Radimir Putin Thanks! Glad you agree with my input. And I do think Miami makes the most sense for Portugal, of those choices. I also think your recommendations are all great! Was also thinking earlier myself that Greece in Virginia makes a lot of sense. Those are all great ideas you've offered. :-)
Kolya Young 1 Apr, 2021 @ 5:08pm
Independently I've been going into the script and adding new start locations for the hell of it just to make gameplay a lot more fun so I thought I'd share those.

-Greece in Richmond VA: since Virginians modeled their aesthetics and ideas of democracy from the Greeks (fitting for Pericles), and since they have a strong military tradition ranging from George Washington to *sigh* Robert E. Lee (fitting for Gorgo)
-Lautaro in Albuquerque NM: fills a void of space in the southwest and makes them fun on the map
-Mali in Phoenix AZ: fills another void of space in the southwest, plus those desert tiles
-Scythia in Wichita KS: I think having a cavalry civ in Kansas just adds a whole wild west vibe to the map
Kolya Young 1 Apr, 2021 @ 4:57pm
@kepparezou I like your suggestions for Babylon and Vietnam, and out of your suggestions for Portugal I'd pick Miami since it would be much more fun as far as gameplay (allowing Portugal to interact with England or Netherlands, which it couldn't starting in New England)
kepparezou 1 Apr, 2021 @ 4:08pm
(couldn't quite fit all my text into my first message....so here's the rest)

Babylon - California (Central Valley or San Diego)
---With how Babylon was in what is now Iraq, I looked into places with Iraqi-American concentrations. Again, many spots are already taken by existing Civs (such as Chicago). These two areas of California do have Iraqi-American populations, so perhaps one of these?

If anyone else would like to weigh in on these - either to agree, or to suggest other good (or even better) locations - please feel free. Again, these are just my thoughts.

Thanks again for the most enjoyable map/mod! :-)
kepparezou 1 Apr, 2021 @ 4:07pm
Hi! I have some additional TSL ideas to share, following a bit of Google searching in my break time today:

-Vietnam - Dallas-Fort Worth or San Diego/Orange County, CA
---There are a number of places with Vietnamese-American populations, but a few of them are located where TSL has already been established for an earlier leader (and I wouldn't dislodge them in favor of Vietnam). I'm thinking DFW could be good, if it's not too close to Australia over in Austin. Plus, it's within relative proximity of some jungle tiles, which I believe are good for this Civ.
-Portugal - Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, or Miami
---As with Vietnam, some of the logical spots for Portugal are already taken by existing Civs. The above are places with at least some population, which could possibly work. Some are admittedly close to other Civs, though. Miami is the one location that I know wouldn't be too close to any others.
O-FAL 27 Mar, 2021 @ 3:10pm
this map would be perfect if you took the time to place at least some of the rivers and lakes in ontario and quebec... right now settling anywhere inland is pretty difficult... an other spot similar to what you have for Buffallo would be good to seperate lake ontario from st lawrence river

anyhow thanks for the great work, having a lot of fun on this map
Jebrim 17 Jan, 2021 @ 2:02pm
Most Southerners are of Scottish descent, so the placement of Scotland in the distant Northeast doesn't make much sense.

Also west of Austin should be the Texas Hill Country. Add some forests hills there. The Eastern half of Texas isn't that dry. There's a lot of grasslands east of the I-35 Corridor.
realy 12 Nov, 2020 @ 10:17pm
You could complete the Great Loop of America with the Panama Canal if you made the Illinois river navigable, which it is in real life.
Andre.Miksha  [author] 15 Oct, 2020 @ 4:26pm
Sorry folks, I've been swamped at work lately and haven't added Gaul or Byzantium. Thanks for keeping up the chats and input.
@jeffwuusa, I do have an eastern USA version of the map that rifs on Colonization in that I created four artificial starting lands along the eastern border with TSLs for England, France, the Netherlands, and Spain. I haven't released that publicly though.
jeffwuusa 24 Sep, 2020 @ 3:02pm
Haven't played on an Enormous map before, but I have downloaded YNAMP but only use subregions (ex. Middle East, Africa, etc) so that it doesn't crash. Does this map crash at full size late game / is there capability to use a smaller section of the map (ex. east of the Mississippi only)?
Kolya Young 22 Sep, 2020 @ 5:20pm
I was just thinking West Virginia or Kentucky would be a good idea for Gaul, just cause a lot of folks out there have Celtic roots, plus its a good fit for the civ
kepparezou 22 Sep, 2020 @ 3:25pm
Oh, and just thought of another TSL idea for Gaul: somewhere in the Ozarks, since there are multiple resources in Missouri and Arkansas that can be mined. This would put them pretty far from the Romans, though, if that happens to also be an important factor in choosing where to place them.

OK, I'll stop suggesting now, and let you other kids weigh in. :-)
kepparezou 22 Sep, 2020 @ 2:27pm
For Gaul:
-They look like they'll be strong militarily, with definite advantages gained from mines / mined resources, and also from being in forests and hills
-I'm thinking West Virginia could be really appropriate for Gaul, since it's got multiple coal resources (and a few other resources, too), and it's basically all forest and hills, around the Appalachian Mountains
-culturally-speaking, a high percentage of the original European settlers (or early immigrants there) were Scotch-Irish, who are pretty much descendants of the Gauls
-With historic rival Rome spawning at Philly, putting the Gauls in WV allows for early interaction between these belligerents ;-)
-TSL idea: really any part of WV, though southern WV had a particularly high concentration of Scotch-Irish when first settled
-Other TSL thoughts: northern NH or VT (hills, forests, mined resources)? Someplace out in Montana, Wyoming, or another state out West, near or in the Rockies (that's not too near the Inca, anyway)?
kepparezou 22 Sep, 2020 @ 2:15pm
For Byzantium:
-no particular area on this map (that I know of) has deep ties to Greece/Byzantium/Eastern Orthodoxy
-as such, I'm thinking you could choose a TSL that is the same or similar to how Constantinople was bordered by water on 3 sides; preferably, one or more resources with a faith yield (such as pearls) would probably also suit them
-TSL ideas: extreme southern Texas, where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico; a coastal tile of Washington or Oregon (not too close to Korea, but sort of near the Arabs, who were one of their enemies); a 'coastal' tile around where either the Ohio or Missouri River empties into the Mississippi (St. Louis?); or maybe the very bottom of Baja California?
kepparezou 22 Sep, 2020 @ 2:09pm
Hi! Continuing to much enjoy this mod. :-) After reading about the new Civs due out on Thursday (Gaul and Byzantium) and watching the preview videos about them on YouTube, I've been thinking a bit about TSL for these two, considering cultural connections, historic elements, and how a certain area (geography / resources) might benefit them, per what they're supposed to be good at. Not sure if you are thinking of having TSL for either or both, but want to share some thoughts I've had for each, in case you are thinking about this. (I'll put these in separate comments.)
Andre.Miksha  [author] 26 Aug, 2020 @ 4:43pm
Dams should be available with the "normal" rivers; I just don't have many floodplain tiles for their placement.
MidwestRibfest 26 Aug, 2020 @ 10:27am
Oh actually, ignore that first part about flooding haha. Reading is fundamental. But still curious about those dams.
MidwestRibfest 23 Aug, 2020 @ 6:58pm
Out of curiosity, do coastal tiles flood and are there spots to put dams? I know some maps don't have it thanks to a lack of info from the devs. But since this is based on YnAMP, I thought it was worth a shot to ask.
kepparezou 20 Aug, 2020 @ 6:02pm
@Radimir Putin Thanks for sharing! Good to know. I might just get the frontier pass myself, then. I appreciate your feedback on this. :-)
Kolya Young 19 Aug, 2020 @ 1:59pm
kepparezou I am playing civ with frontier pass on an older macbook and I have found no issues
kepparezou 18 Aug, 2020 @ 5:15pm
Baltimore would give them a bit of space, in the event that someone would want both Ethiopia and America in the same game. There may even be some Ethiopians living around B'more today. So I think that could indeed work well, for all of these reasons. :-)

I don't have the New Frontier pass myself yet. I play this game on Mac, and am not sure whether the developers have gotten it working properly for Macs yet, from what I've read online. Do either of you know anything about this? I do kind of want to get it, but only if doing so doesn't wreck things for me. (I have upgraded up through Gathering Storm, and the game runs well.) Thanks!
Andre.Miksha  [author] 18 Aug, 2020 @ 5:00pm
Those are both quite workable additions, Radimir Putin and kepparezou. Thanks!
Kolya Young 18 Aug, 2020 @ 4:19pm
To touch on kepparezou's comment I think Baltimore would be a great candidate for Ethiopia's TSL location. It happens to also have a lot of cultural importance for African Americans
kepparezou 18 Aug, 2020 @ 3:26pm
Hi! I'm continuing to enjoy your map :-) and have a couple more ideas for you:
1) Maybe add a few maize resources in Iowa and Nebraska? Those two states definitely have plenty of corn, and it's a big deal to them. Not sure if I'd add very many, though, just to ensure the other resources you've already allocated to those lands can remain there.
2) I'm thinking you could add a TSL for Ethiopia, like you've done for GC and the Maya. Having lived previously in DC for a number of years, I know there's a substantial community in and around the city. I know you have already assigned America to the WDC tile, so you could maybe have Ethiopia start on the Bethesda, MD tile. (I know some Ethiopians have been priced out of the city and now reside in MD, so Bethesda is probably the best spot for them.)
Keep up the great work!
kepparezou 24 Jun, 2020 @ 5:08pm
I like where you put the Maori. Tried them out for a bit last night and this morning. Thanks for that adjustment!
Andre.Miksha  [author] 23 Jun, 2020 @ 5:07pm
Updated with Gran Colombia's start location fixed and one included for Maori. Thanks to Radimir Putin for locating my Colombian error.
kepparezou 22 Jun, 2020 @ 11:39pm
I think either of those spots would be good for Kupe. Having him at sea and relatively near one or more islands sounds ideal to me. I won't be upset if you choose not to add Hawaii; it would be kinda WAY out there, for one thing.
Andre.Miksha  [author] 22 Jun, 2020 @ 8:58pm
I'm not likely to add Hawaii but could start Kupe in the Bahamas or off Cuba.
Andre.Miksha  [author] 22 Jun, 2020 @ 8:56pm
I fear that my nerfing of Baton Rouge has just made the area just southeast of Devil's Tower into the new common start area. I've removed a sheep up there and will test that out.
kepparezou 22 Jun, 2020 @ 8:07pm
Cool. Funny how we both got Montana when playing as Peter. :-)

I just tried to start a game with Kupe of the Maori, after pondering where they might start. Obviously, they're not a TSL civ, but they typically would start on an ocean tile, right? Interestingly, it placed me in Montana as well. Now I'm wondering if you'd consider maybe making them TSL, one way or another? I know Hawaii isn't on your map right now, and I'm not sure if adding it would 1) fit within the existing map, within scale (meaning, be where it should be, in relation to the North American landmass), and 2) risk introducing more bugs that you'd have to squash.

Just want to mention this as food for thought.
Andre.Miksha  [author] 22 Jun, 2020 @ 6:45pm
I located my errors and corrected them, so we're should be good. However, a diety game I'm in as Peter in Montana is going well enough, but my Gran Columbia start location is apparently not right because they're in Oregon. So, that I need to fix.
kepparezou 22 Jun, 2020 @ 4:02pm
Great! Thanks for letting us know. Although my weekend was fuller than I had anticipated, I did a bit of 'testing' when I had time, and for the most part, things look to be running smoothly. My existing files all loaded properly, and these were both of the vanilla and Rise and Fall platforms. I then started a game last night on the Gathering Storm platform (first time ever - just bought it), and though I had to click the "Load Database" button to make it work (which I don't recall having to do previously), things seem fine with it, once again. Phoenicia indeed spawns at Detroit, as expected :-) and I didn't experience any weird or bad behaviors, even with some other mods also running in my game. I'll try to find some time to continue my games and see what else I notice, and will note if anything seems off. Again, great job!
Andre.Miksha  [author] 20 Jun, 2020 @ 10:48am
Update is released. See change notes for details! Thanks everyone! Please alert me to any issues!
Andre.Miksha  [author] 19 Jun, 2020 @ 6:01pm
I've resolved my testing bug but am now focused on buffing Mexico's land and resources to be more realistic and also will be adding maize and honey for those with that DLC. Hopeful to release the update on or before Father's Day.
kepparezou 16 Jun, 2020 @ 7:01pm
No problem, re: Caruthersville. It was merely something I happened across, and it didn't bother me personally at all!

As for the starting point for Phoenicia: I think Detroit does make the most sense, per how you've noted it's directly on the waterway. If Phoenicia is selected as an AI opponent after you've made this update, there is the chance they will move onto the Livonia tile (or another tile that's not Detroit), but then that's their fate/fault, of course. We know how 'smart' the AI is. ;-)

Good luck with these latest updates! I hope the errors don't persist. You've done great work with this, and you don't deserve such trouble. lol
Andre.Miksha  [author] 16 Jun, 2020 @ 6:41pm
Yikes. Please forgive the error for Caruthersville. As for Phoenicia, Livonia or right on Detroit? On Detroit would probably serve that Civ best as it would lie directly upon the waterways.

I'm in some testing of the changes, I'm getting some errors pop up with some of my rivers, which is strange. I still need to identify iron deposits and horses in the east and some
kepparezou 15 Jun, 2020 @ 7:15pm
Excited to see these updates when they're done. :-) I have a couple more things to offer up:
1) Another really minor one - I settled "Daruthersville" in southeastern Missouri in my most recent game, and wiki'ed them, to see what's notable about that place. My search result suggested it's actually "Caruthersville". Not sure if anyone knows for sure, but just want to mention this.
2) As for more TSL ideas, how about Phoenicia in Detroit? I believe that part of the country has a sizable number of people of Lebanese descent; of course, that's where Phoenicia largely was where Lebanon now is. I think it might work well for them, too, since Carthage/Phoenicia strategy tends to be helped by having bodies of water nearby.
Continuing to enjoy your mod. Thanks again for all your efforts!
Andre.Miksha  [author] 12 Jun, 2020 @ 7:16pm
@ Radimir Putin : I can get behind these changes. I'd be interested in the tile coordinates you've selected.
I've tinkered with the Baton Rouge area and hope to get an update out soon, including incorporation of these TSL updates.
Thanks for the support!
Kolya Young 11 Jun, 2020 @ 5:57pm
- Inca in Denver CO
Denver has a high latino population (made this choice before Gran Colombia was a thing but I have Mac so I don't have the update yet), and its mountainous terrain makes for excellent gameplay for the Inca. They also help fill the geographic void in the Rockies

- Arabia in Salt Lake City UT
This is certainly the least historically accurate choice I have made, but I considered a few things in this decision: Utah is known for being the religious center of Mormonism, its surrounded by desert, Arabia is well suited for both religion and desert, and it fills the void in the Southwest between LA and Texas. Arabia also serves as a nice religious and military rival for Japan
Kolya Young 11 Jun, 2020 @ 5:57pm
- Kongo in Memphis TN
In the same spirit as adding the Zulu I thought 2 African civs would be nicer than having a token ;). I ended up picking Memphis of all places, because it's further from Louisiana and Florida than a choice like Alabama or Mississippi. Plus Memphis a cultural hub associated with African American roots, and as far as gameplay is concerned they are bound to encounter a few religions granted their geographic position

- Sweden in Omaha NB
Following Minnesota Nebraska has one of the highest Swedish American populations and they help fill the void between the Great Lakes/Upper Mississippi and the West Coast
Kolya Young 11 Jun, 2020 @ 5:56pm
- Australia in Austin TX
I thought adding a civ for Texas would be a very nice addition, and as far as every civ in the game I think Australia is the best substitute (despite lacking any historic affinity with Texas). When I tested out the civ I found that housing on coastal cities works well with the Rio Grande and Gulf of Mexico, and the pasture cultural bombs feel very fitting for a state famous for its cattle ranches.

- Zulu in Columbia SC
Whenever I tried out the map in single player one thing that I found is that the mid south is relatively empty (with the exception of America but they're a tight squeeze with Rome). I also thought about the fact that there aren't any civs so far that represent the African American diaspora on a continental US map. Aside from a good strategic location (between Rome and Spain so great for war), Columbia has one of the highest African American populations per capita in the United States.
