barricades are the easiest to use requiring the least space
spike traps the hardest as they require the most 'free' space to deploy (if deploying left to right doesnt fit try moving mouse up to down or at another angle. caltrops need less space than traps but more than barricades
This is why i have limited traps to 2 as there will be limited options on where to place them. You can only deploy them in your initial zone of deployment for units, so in major settlement that would be inside your walls, in minor settlements there may be more flexibility on placing things at the outer edges of your buildings. There are also some restrictions in terms of control/victory points.
Now seriously it would be awesome if you added many more barricades to make sieges be more difficult for the attacker (also if you think about it it would be realistic if defenders can place many barricades in all streets, also take in account that they barely unbalance battles :))
caltrops are cavalry only - spike pits infantry and cavalry both would also kill your own troops although the pits are one kill per pit
best to use them as either a delaying tactic or to try to funnel an enemy to attack a point you choose or to protect your flanks/rear. they are not meant to be very powerful
