It uses two distance sensors to measure the distance below the aircraft, one sensor sweeps side to side.
It then will compare the two inputs, if and when you pass over a submerged object it will display that discrepancy between the submerged object and the sea floor on the 'print out'/screen.

Technically this aircraft is alittle broken (mostly involving the engines).
As for the gear my initial guess is either you're not taking the parking brake off, or you're playing on a low physics setting.
- Improved Radar (Low Gain Range: 10KM / High Gain Range 3KM)
- Sonobuoys now use Passive Sonar
- Torpedo equipped with passive Sonar
- Mark 6A Plotting Board usability improved
