Well, I don't know. I tried a dozen formation mode toninght, but wtf. May I am the noob, but these aren't effective at all. In Roman Formation my Heavy Infantry lost 40 men while charging barbarians lost 0 in 1 min fight. What am I doing wrong? Battle difficulty is normal.

inciendary added? wtf

The issue may not be an ineffective buff it might just look like one. I just did a legionary vs legionary test and even without throwing pilum the unit without the formation far and away clobbers the unit in the formation. This happens because of two fairly obvious reasons.

First the legionary group in formation attacks and counter attacks with a smaller number of units on the front line which means the damage potential of each unit is 1 hit v 3 targets however often they strike (aproximation) so it can take as long as 3 times longer for a unit in formation to kill units out of formation.
Emrys of Ailliau 3 May, 2016 @ 7:18pm
The second reason is the inverse of the first reason. You have 3 units out of formation (aproximation) all pounding on 1 unit in formation so he dies 3 times faster.

So what to do?

I suggest increasing the Melee Attack/Defense stats and changing the attack animation to an arm thrust over top of the shield for a faster attack frequency. Coupled with disabling the formation when flanked or at less than 2/3 manpower.

Excellent mod as initiative but I agree with @Cheese bellow; could you fix that ?
Cheese 6 Oct, 2015 @ 10:37am
agree with Sir Motte, the roman formation looks cool while marching but in combat it doesn't help much but lossing the fight. dude, please fix this and please don't add unlimited fatigue resistance in as some other mods do. that's OP and totally fictional andddd reason i use your mods now:) update please and thx for making it.
Steerpike 1 Sep, 2015 @ 10:44pm
This looks and operates beautifully, but is it possible to remove the chanting?

By all historical accounts, Roman legionaries advanced *silently* on their enemies when they marched. It was one of the many examples of their iron discipline compared to the barbarian rabble they faced.

I really like this mod. Especially the "roman formation" looks really impressive. I just used this mod with the emperor edition, so I don't know how it worked originally. But as previously stated in comments, the "roman formation" decreases the combat capabilities significantly.
I don't mind that just a few units fight, it's more like a feature of the formation, that only legionaries with an opportunity to strike leave the formation shortly. I like that. But to conter the flaws in fighting performance, the formation should have the buffs mentioned in its description, which it doesn't. The stats are the same with or without the formation.

So please, fix this (buff the units like described)! Because your mod is so awesome, I hate that i can only use it for style reasons, with a huge combat drawback.

Keep up the good work!

Update please patch 16.
Sir Motte 2 Nov, 2014 @ 4:56pm
After playing with the mod for a while now I can safely say, that for whatever reason, my legionairs are a lot less effective and suffer more losses while in Roman Formation than without it.

All that happens is longer lasting battles because there are just a few legionairs actually fighting while the rest cowers just feet away behind their shields. At least the whole first line should be in battle and occasionally fall back in line if they wander too far away. (if that is possible to mod at least)

I doublechecked by trying the mod with a clean vanilla install to make sure I didn't mess it up with another mod.
TexanChiss 27 Oct, 2014 @ 3:26pm
i tested this as well and it does not work

UPDATE
Coastalaxe 19 Oct, 2014 @ 9:01am
I've recently tested this mod with the latest patch, and the only effect I've noticed from the "roman formation" is that it makes combat last a little longer due to reducing the amount of legionaries fighting. However, I haven't noticed it increasing the overall effectiveness of roman infantry.

Specifically, I tested Hastati vs. Celctic Swords. In vanilla patch 15, The Celts beat the Hastati by a large margine. That doesn't change with this mod (in it's current form, as far as my tests go).
Coastalaxe 18 Oct, 2014 @ 6:40pm
isn't*

@shawn1macqueen

Complaining really is called for at all. Mod makers literally owe absolutely nothing to you. This mod could be removed in it's entirety in the next "update" and it wouldn't be amoral at all. No promise has been made, and there is no reasonable expectation that obligates a mod author (unless they have explicitely promised something). Neither am I trying to sound like a dick, but I really see no justification for the way you phrased your comment.

@Moon Hoplite

I really enjoy this mod, and would really appreciate it if it were updated, or at least confirmed to be working with the latest patch (with relatively few/minor bugs) :)
KhorneFlakes 11 Oct, 2014 @ 8:47pm
uhmm, did moonhoplite die? or did he forget that his own mod existed? Not trying to sound like a dick, but it hasn't been updated since may, and there are still problems to be fixed.

For example, romans aren't the only ones that get to use roman formation for some reason, in custom battles every single barbarian sword unit and use it as well for some reason.

Plus, Every time my romans go into Roman formation, they make that annoying "HWUAH" sound every two seconds.

Not asking for much, but a little attention to your own mod wouldn't hurt
josea_bcn91 2 Oct, 2014 @ 12:59pm
It's a great mod but you should improve the shield wall formations.

update?
off3 18 Sep, 2014 @ 5:53am
Is there an patch 15 update coming or what, seems to be the only good formations mod out there.. :)
RabbitDarko 25 Jun, 2014 @ 9:15am
radious and this mod are working together...i have radious...and roman formation is there, along with hollow square.
RabbitDarko 25 Jun, 2014 @ 9:10am
also guys..the roman formation is just that..a formation...you have to know when to use it...because they will stay and hold formation...if an enemy hits you at an angle and not head on the people at the other end of the formation are not gonna move in and help..they are ordered to mantain formation...thats how you lose...unclick the formation..click attack on enemy attacking you then reclick the formation..they will then form up on the enemy and fight head to head...if u just leave it on as some magic special power they will get annihilated more so then without the formation on...theres a certian way and time to use it.. because like yall i did get my ass kicked until i figured out how to use it properly....great mod.
RabbitDarko 25 Jun, 2014 @ 9:02am
i dont know if this will ever get read...ive never written a modder...nor have i ever requested anything from anyone...in movies cuz i dont know history...the romans tend to fight in testudo formation...using their shields as defense not from mere archers but literally in melee. it appears my beloved testudo is worthless in this game other then protection from arrows..which wasnt its only purpose...anyway to show me where to edit testudo defensive stats so my romans can use the formation properly?...romans fought side by side shield to shield and used their formations to their benefit...im not getting a benifit from formations like testudo...your roman formation mod is good..i like the added touch of them hollering hoah with every other step as they march foward..please help me with this other area...its very logical.
Guvenoren 29 May, 2014 @ 1:58pm
Is there a mod that only fixes defensive testudo animation?
I dont like this formation roman formation
Socky 27 May, 2014 @ 10:39am
when will tis be updated for the latest update?
Godzilla ツ 24 May, 2014 @ 6:24am
with your mod activated the units are really weak. i tested this out with the pretorian guards VS some random poor egyptian infantry and had the shoield wall thing activated and they lost, so i really do not see the purpose of using it just stating my opinion :)
Arirang 18 May, 2014 @ 10:49pm
OMG. Are u Genius or somthing?
Animu Lady 12 May, 2014 @ 7:58am
can you add a wedge formation for the roman inf historicaly and maybe for the barbarians???
Aerial 10 May, 2014 @ 12:05pm
Will you be updating this mod or your Greek+Roman Formation overhaul instead? I can't wait either of these mods get updated.

could we please get an update, also don't know if it's just me but with Del at least the roman formation looks like it needs some work, units die quickly and don't get many kills
