You could make it four aspect where you want the signal close to each other and three where the signals a bit less close and two aspect where the line is very quite. Below 25 M.P.H you do not need Distant signals also know as repeaters. Banner repeaters are not the same as Distant signals.
The signal by the start should be at the platforms ends and the arrival lines not part way through the junctions and the signal should be at least 200 meters from any point work or anything else which can causes a conflicting move.
AWS ramp should be placed about 180 meters from the signal or the speed warning board.
Add these in before / after you have painted your fields but not added scenery.
I tend to use the tarmac brush to plan where they go then go over with the road tool.
going for country side use 2 lane with low or no traffic on them main roads / motorway going through the terrain pick a 4/6 lane road with medium traffic.
you can add in dirt roads to the fields as well if you want but most of the time I leave these out.
mix this up with some run by the rail far from the rail going over and under.
bridge wise smaller road use older brick style and main road use modern larger brick structures
oh and save save save (shortcut is F2)
save your work regularly as last thing you want is it to crash and you loose the 30+ minutes of work you have done only to go and redo it.
Sorry for wall of text
there an 1000 character limit :/
There is no right or wrong way to do this if you want to use only 2d assets it's your choice & your route.
I find it handy to have a freeroam scenario with a train in it for the area I'm working on as this helps with how it will looks once complete as i can drive past and go 'yeah that looks countryside' or 'this area is missing something'. It also helps to see how much clearance you have with the line-side brush & trees. Shortcut to go to editor mode is to press 'Ctrl + E'
Paint the fields with the styles you want grass, ploughed , corn etc
as it's UK themed the fields don't have to be very square some can be long and rectangular, wrap around 2 sides of another field. don't paint all the fields from one town to the next in one go do it in stages as it makes the next step less tedious.
Add the walls to the track-side, use the changes in fields next to the track to as markers if you want to mix up the wall type.
next start building the fences/walls for the fields complete a couple of these.
add the foliage:
For track-side brush I tend to use grass - Moor or Grass weeds as I find they have the nicest look and they don't 'overcrowd' scenery around them add some bushes in the re as well trees can be individual or a line of them
For field edges - repeat same as above but don't need the grass/weeds as not as near to the railway.
Paint the tall mountains - fully cover with dark grass (add snow caps?) and add some rocky edges few trees add to about halfway up, cover some areas with thicker foliage
Smaller hills - make dark green matches the rest
make you hills look nicer than the default grass and rock mix TS does as default.
Station fences - add some fences to the platforms at Hillbrook & Buxdale between the buildings.
Signals - You have too many signals at Ashburton, you can reduce the number needed and it will still run, it is difficult to explain via comments on what you need to, I can create a diagram to explain & show the signals you would need/ can use.
Got stuck on something? ask me anything, I've been route building for 6 years! Hopefully I can be of help!
