Of course, you should have a separate save... just in case.
I've also personally switched to the rewritten version. I think the only drawback is, at least for some people, that the rewritten version doesn't support any previous RimWorld version.
In opposite to the other mods I've updated, where I had to make minor changes, this version here was primarily a tag update, so people knew it would work with v1.3.
Also, huge kudos for pointing out the other mods and describing them as better alternatives -- rather selfless, which seems rare these days, so that deserves some unasked-for-praise, as well!

It also hasn't been updated in a very long time (not that it needed to be updated)
