Yo Phoenix. The term Byzantium and Byzantine was first used by a German historian to differentiate the Roman Empire of Antiquity and the Roman Empire of the Medieval era, and also to distinguish it from the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire was the Catholic West's honest attempt at restoring the western empire. It was only called holy from the reign of Fredrick Barbarossa onwards. Before it was just Imperium Romanum - the Roman Empire. By the 17th century it had indded become a decentralized confederation dominated by the Austrian Habsburgs but for most of its existence it was a powerful empire many sought control over. What you wrote is complete and utter nonsense.

@Aeterna Quiris The word byzantin was invented so the pope and catholics could feel special and make sure they were more "legitmate". its a dumb invention, and you using the term means your just bending the knee to the pope and catholics. A false religion who constantly tries to rewrite history. Thats literally why it the term was thought up wiyh. Catholics were having a hissy fit that there were non pope worshipers who called themselves Romans. so they came up with a new term to try and erase history.

I find Clearwood's statements about how "the Romans never called themselves Byzantines" quite amusing when we do the same thing with the Egyptians, Persians and various tribal societies of western Europe. What a Romaboo lol.

How is it a play on words? Just because something is accepted doesn't always mean it's right. "ethnographically, even culturally" I'm not disputing this. All I'm saying is the Romans never seen themselves as anything other than Roman. Why would the Eastern Roman Empire that is the surviving half make up a new name that no one at that time knew them to be? Why would they throw away all the Imperial prestige and history to create a new empire with a new name? Doesn't make sense. Yes I know "Byzantine" is the accepted modern term but it doesn't make sense to call a empire by a different name than what its people called it themselves. Anyways I agree to disagree on this. Have yourself a good day.

I use the term Byzantine Empire solely because it is accepted in the scientific historical society, of which I am also a part (only because it is convenient for studying the historical period of the development of this state)
Aeterna Quiris  [author] 27 Mar, 2023 @ 1:41pm
@ Clearwood I will repeat myself again especially for you. The Byzantine Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire are one state formation. The inhabitants of this state considered and called themselves Romans (Perhaps that's what you want to say), but of course, ethnographically, even culturally, they were not. EACH of the 3 formulations (the Byzantine Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Roman Empire) has the right to exist. What you are doing is not "educating people in this matter", but a simple play on words :mhfury:
Clearwood 27 Mar, 2023 @ 1:12pm
@Starsmil Real "Roman" music from the 2 century would be correct. From the founding of the Republic to the Fall of Constantinople and in between is Roman music. Not sure how a factual statement is funny but hey you do you.
Clearwood 27 Mar, 2023 @ 1:08pm
"modern historical constructs, one of which is the term "Byzantine Empire" So you're ok with using a made up name just because it's modern? A name to describe a people who never used that name for themselves? It's just misleading anymore when the truth is out there for people to research and learn in 2023. All I'm trying to do is help educate people on the subject. If people choose to remain ignorant on the subject I can't help that it is what it is.

if mod be named "Roman Music", u would write that real Roman music is from 2 century )
So funny dudes.
Aeterna Quiris  [author] 27 Mar, 2023 @ 5:26am
Guys, we live in the XXI century, not in the XII in the Eastern Roman Empire... When I gave the name of the modification, I proceeded from modern historical constructs, one of which is the term "Byzantine Empire". I do not intend to change it ( :mhseymour:
SectorCheese 27 Mar, 2023 @ 3:56am
yeah Romans, not alien byzantine :(
Clearwood 24 Mar, 2023 @ 4:57pm
The name of your mod should be change. Needs to be Roman no such thing as "Byzantine" music. Made up term after the Roman Empire fell. To each their own if you keep Byzantine in it though.
