Scale Tanning

In regards to @quoting_mungo, is there a way to make it compatible with Brom's leather scaling mod? I have a mess of giant alligators that I don't want to waste.

I've been looking at both mods, and I'm wondering if there's a simple modification that can be made to Brom's tanning reaction to grab up scale as well as the skin globs.

EDIT: OK, that was easier than I thought. In this mod, just add the following to creature_scale_leather_vattic.txt under the [SELECT_MATERIAL:SCALE] section. The most important is the Reaction class bit. The rest is stockpile and such.
[STOCKPILE_GLOB]
[DO_NOT_CLEAN_GLOB]
[BUTCHER_SPECIAL:GLOB:NONE]
[REACTION_CLASS:SKIN]

picturing you dipping a scale hide into a bucket of piss for a month and coming back confused why it hasn't tanned & smells so bad lmao

I can't seem to figure out how to get leather from fish. Os it through the fishery, or the tanner? Do I have to unautomate the fishery like for parchment?

Just noting, so other people don't sit confused like I did: this mod does not seem to be compatible with Broms's leather scaling mod, as that mod replaces the tanning reaction with a glob-based one. Was scratching my head for a good while there, had forgotten I'd changed my mod loadout (and world) between the fortress where this mod worked fine and this one where it doesn't. Thank goodness I eventually thought to look at the mod raws.

No shade on you OR Broms, just noting the incompatibility. Time to re-gen worlds AGAIN. XD

@Hiran:
Not in a simple way I don't think. I believe you can make changes to creatures without needing to generate a new world, but I don't know enough about how it applies mods now there is workshop integration.

Is it somehow possible to add this mod to current game?
Llamageddon 25 Jan, 2023 @ 9:09am
And actually, it does, but not as small as you are hoping I think. The smallest it seems to go to is enough skin for 1/3 of a leather, with guineafowl.
Llamageddon 25 Jan, 2023 @ 9:06am
No, but I am working on that at the moment. There is a quick but dirty fix, but I'm seeing if I can pull off a more naunced method. I'll be sure to share any promising results with you, or the quick fix if the results aren't so promising.

@mohard:
It has no impact on butchery yields. Most weird leather will only be brought from off site as you say. One thing I forget is whether fish cleaners produce scales as waste. Fishing was kind of broken for so long I've not used it in years.

@Llamageddon:
Just saw you released your own interesting leather balancing mod. Will have to look into how it works and see if our mods are compatible. Does it mean you can actually get leather when butchering smaller creatures?

@Lizy_Sticks:
The first version of this mod I uploaded still contained a test reaction that spawned leather. I released a patch not long after that disabled the reaction. The game should have offered to update the next time you opened a save.

Releasing a patch that removes it entirely would require a world re-gen. There are issues with the Steam Workshop update process currently. It will tell you a new version of a mod is available and compatible with your current world/save when it actually isn't. To get around this I de-listed the original version and uploaded this one. This one is without that reaction.

It still should have offered to install the patch for the de-listed version you have installed. If not please reach out and I will help you get it sorted when I finish work tonight, or tomorrow at any time that is convenient. I'll accept your friend request on here.

is magic leather just spawning it XD lol if it is you left it on
mohard 23 Jan, 2023 @ 11:44pm
Btw, correct me if I'm wrong - this will not change butchering yields that much, aka - if sth was too small to yield skin/scale then you still won't get it. But you may simply request herring leather from a caravan, right?
mohard 23 Jan, 2023 @ 11:40pm
Oh i didn't realize you could do snail leather already... I guess keeping it aligned with vanilla is the correct approach in that case. Thanks for explaining.

And I just googled fish leather - the world keeps surprising me!
Llamageddon 23 Jan, 2023 @ 9:25pm
Don't inform me I can get fairy leather and threaten to take it away in the same breath! If you do, I hope you release a haute couture patch for people who want their dwarves parading around in bushtit and fairy leather clothing. Great mod by the way, I've just put my hunter on watch for any reptiles in the area.
Vattic  [author] 23 Jan, 2023 @ 7:11pm
Some examples: snails, worms, bushtits,and fairies all have leather varieties in the vanilla game.
Vattic  [author] 23 Jan, 2023 @ 7:04pm
I considered giving it a name besides leather, but figured it would be simpler to keep the naming consistent with how it can be used and stored in game. Also tanned alligator skin is called leather in real life. Also the scaled skins are called "scale" so calling the processed skins "scale" also could be confusing.

As for including fish leather it's for a few reasons:
- Fish leather is a thing in real life, surprisingly for me.
- In vanilla every animal skin can be turned to leather, including the non-scaled fish, and other tiny creatures. Keeping consistent with the vanilla game seemed a reasonable editorial choice.

In my old pre v50 mod collection I have it so some creatures are "too small for leather" to make things more sensible. It did remove leather from some creatures whose skins are used for it traditionally, but where I figured it would be silly to have whole outfits made of it. I could release similar in future if there is interest?

Anhcovy leather cloak is amazing! smells so delicious all the dwarfs
go crazy when the anchovy leather cloak miner urist mcfishsmelly walks in.
mohard 23 Jan, 2023 @ 6:53am
Nice one, but I wonder why you also decided to enable it for fish too? Anchovy leather sounds more than a little weird to me, lol.
annaflyte 23 Jan, 2023 @ 6:45am
Nice, I wanted this

Can I suggest you change the word from leather to "hide" like "alligator hide boots" or even "alligator scale boots"? To make it more special
