Food high priority is given to perishable food compared to permanent food.
Alcohol is never eaten (to avoid the sleeping tablet incident).
Spice is never eaten (to avoid eating herbs that have other uses).
Food that makes unhappy is never eaten (to avoid eating automatic happyness dumping).
Aiming cancels opening and eating actions started automatically (to soften combat-auto-eat).
I wonder what food could have killed you as bleach and other known poisonous food are ignored, as well as rotten food. If you got more info on it, please share.
When you are runing or in combat stance, auto eat is inhibited. There is a small period in between the switch from running to combat stance that the mod uses to start drinking / eating that is problematic and I gues that's what is bothering you. I'll try to handle that.
I'll have a look at the food selection algorithm to better handle your 'potato' case and the likes.

do not remove game speed settings at the end of auto open and auto eat.
Thanks for report though, Alphonso's death will not be for nothing.
I screwed up and didnt notice my character was auto-chowing down on rotten food, ended up getting food poisining to death. RIP Alphonso Woodcock, Died from eating rotten, frozen food.
