this mod should come out sooner. It's pretty weak for the era and often skipped over by even ai because of how weak it is.

I have not seen this or any wonder behaves like this. Could be an in-game glitch. Have you tried other wonders that behave like this? I suppose you could also try save and reload the game to see if the graphical glitch disappears.

Was buiding the Osaka Castle and and had a flood that flooded the building hex. The next turn I used a great person to finish building the castle. The great person completed the castle and I received the 5 Ronin. But the Castle figure does not show up on the map although the hex description states the Castle is there on the hex (just can't see it). Any idea why the Castle building does not show up on the map although the hex description says it is there?

I am not going to make changes until Mercenary Game Mode comes out. Spare me the lecture.

Obviously I can't comment on a game mode that hasn't released yet, which might change things, but I also personally just don't find it that interesting strategically if the whole build up until the wonder is exactly the same as a vanilla Musketeer build, and the payoff is just a slightly different Musketeer.

If the design intent is for Ronin to compete with Musketeers, then you should consider the feedback from earlier comments regarding why Musketeers will be significantly stronger. In order to give the player a reason to build this wonder, it needs to provide some sort of competitive advantage and difference in build order/strategy compared to simply going Musketeers. It isn't enough for the unit itself to be on par, because building the wonder has a significant lag time.

I need this wonder to be unlocked at Renaissance, by technology or civic (so if a Renaissance civic fits, I might change it).

If you insist to know the reasons, then here are the spoilers:

1. Mercenary Game Mode.
- Ronin are designed to fight on par with firearms mercenary units (and musketeers). Unlocking Osaka Castle too early would be problematic.

2. Japanese castles wonder
- I intend to make more Japanese castles from the Sengoku period (approx. 1467 - 1590), and my plan was to unlock them at the same tech or civic.

I hope this could explain my decision clear enough.

What is the reason you feel so strongly about the unlock tech vs the other suggestions? I think it would be worth sacrificing some historical flavor for the sake of gameplay.

Yes, I have considered Castles and Mercenaries, but I need this wonder to be unlocked in Renaissance Era, by tech or civic.
I might adjust the unlock requirement and/or ronin abilities when Mercenary Game Mode comes out.
Osaka Castle can be built on flat tiles, hills or floodplains.

I assume it can be built on a Flat or Hill tile of any Plain/Grassland/Snow/Tundra/Desert? On Floodplain Feature okay?

Additional food for thought, it was built I believe as an example or a way forward to unify Japan. So maybe the city it is built in should require a Government Plaza or Diplomatic Quarter, and not need to be build Adjacent to the City Center, just in the same city as one of those Districts (whatever you would choose, if you even want to.)

And i play with Great Sovereigns MOD, i would give it compatibility with that mod to provide 1 Great Person Point of Sovereign (like it does with Alhambra.

I mean I think there is a perfect place for them.

You mentioned Mercenaries... and there is a "Mercenaries CIVIC", comes Late Medieval (same as Alhambra which you have taken inspiration from clearly, just it is in the Civic Tree not the Tech Tree.) Sort of seems perfect for it! To make it even better it requires Feudalism (where Japan gets Samurai), and you don't need a ton of other Civics either, you just need the Late Classical, Military Training CIVIC. (There is also no wonder there.)

That's my suggestion.

Last thing, does the Wonder provide any kind of Great People Points? If not, maybe it could provide 1 Merchant 1 General point each (similar to Alhambra.)

@Phantagonist I understand it is to be designed as an equal to a Samurai (as they were Samurai Mercenaries without a Master/Lord.) In the game, Samurai come Feudalism CIVIC (which replace Man-At-Arms at Apprenticeship,) the Wonder you made is a Castle and obviously their is a Castle TECH, which after Apprenticeship (Early and Late Medieval respectively,) as well as, Feudalism comes at Early Medieval, I would say putting them at Gunpowder TECH in Early Renaissance might not be exactly what you are looking for; for both theme & gameplay.

1. Osaka Castle has no district and building requirement.
2. Ronins do not cost strategic resources.
3. Ronins have no maintenance cost.
4. I did not set Ronins to forbid corps and armies, so they should be able to purchase Ronins directly with Military Academy.
5. Ronins have 3 Movement and 2 sight.
6. Ronins upgrade to Line Infantry.

Ronins are designed to have the same strength as samurais, with the +10 combat strength against stronger units (representing the Defense of Osaka Castle).

I can't find a suitable Renaissance civic for Osaka Castle, but I may change the tech requirement to a civic requirement when the Mercenary Game Mode comes out, and change the ronin ability similar to other merc units.

SUGGESTION: If you are going to have the Ronin's base Strength so lower compared to the same Units at Gunpowder, even with the +10 from lower strength & no strength reduction from wounded & the extra movement... that "Units they kill earn Gold = Unit's Strength"?
It goes with the "Mercenary theme" and it's not a lot of Gold (or it could be Faith I suppose.)

I just think it needs more, because other players like Spain can get a 58 strength unit at that same tech, and quickly buy an upgrade of a unit to get the 58 strength the same turn. Where as, to get the Ronin you have to have more build an expensive wonder first, and it isn't a tech you can really "rush."

I assume, because it wasn't stated, that there is not District/Building requirement before building (unlike Alhambra?)

Do they require Niter to buy more of them (after the 5 free Units?)

Do purchases of more units have a gold maintenance cost to them (assuming the 5 free Units would not?)

Assuming you can combine into Corps & Armies.., but Can you buy Corps & Armies of them, once available?

I see a 3 Movement, is the Site Range a basic 2?

Can you upgrade these units later to Line Infantry or Infantry?

Thanks for your feedback. About the requirements, I just couldnt find any suitable Renaissance civic suiting Osaka Castle. That said, this wonder is designed for the proposed Mercenary Game Mode, and I might change the wonder effects and requirements accordingly when that game mode comes out.

I'm a little unclear from the description whether it is possible to buy ronins at cities other than where the wonder was built. If they can only be purchased in the city that owns the wonder, that would make this much, much weaker IMO because generally the city building the wonder will be quite far behind the front line, delaying the timing attack. Seems like a cool design, but maybe the unlock tech should be different, since the build for this would be essentially the same as going for a gunpowder/musketmen timing attack, but this would hit later since you have to wait for the wonder to build. It doesn't seem that attractive since musketmen are already really strong when you first get them. If this was on a different tech path, or even on a civic, it would actually create a completely new build focused around a ronin timing attack. I think this would be more interesting on a civic, because the ronin ability against higher combat power units would be more relevant in a culture-focused domination build where you are likely behind enemies in military tech until later in the game.
