I was curious, would building underground help with insulating a base? Like if I made sure to seal off the hole, and assuming I don't break out to the surface, I should think that 'bubble' wouldn't be affected by the external atmos?

What kind of effect will this mod have on a basic mostly-steel base on the moon, which in vanilla tends to require active cooling to stay below 50C? Will solar radiation become more of an issue than it already is, or will the base radiate tons of heat?

StationeersMods has been replaced. This is the link for the new plugin:

The documentation is rather opaque; do I have it right that Q is the Joules Transferred Per Tick. IE, if I have a Q of 1000, a single wall heater will compensate
HyratelWyvern 20 Mar @ 3:23pm
since almost everything has to have a frame under it, what's the best way to insulate downwards? can't exactly put walls on the underside of buried frames.

@N_A - all windows/glass blocks have the same values; it's mostly all glass
@Submachine - no only vanilla blocks at the moment

does this work with the T.U.B.E mod?
N_A 4 Mar @ 2:12pm
Is there a difference in the material windows are made out of or are they all the same with their insulation and reflectivity?

Would be really nice if it worked on Dedicated Servers
The mods runs but no atmos is being calculated.

a recalculation is done (via a background thread) every time you build/place a block/wall and every ~5 seconds.
Pch91 17 Dec, 2024 @ 4:12am
Does it recalculate itself or do you need to press f8 or f3?
Free Lunch  [author] 26 Nov, 2024 @ 6:23pm
@Chronia, thanks! No, voxels don't transfer heat (at least in this mod), only man made structures do. Do vanilla voxels bleed heat?

Re. radiation. My next update will be to implement a similar system as the developers have for the pipes. Radiation will only lose heat up/down to atmospheric temperature. This will hopefully remove the exploit of infinite energy dissipation.
Chronia 12 Nov, 2024 @ 10:31am
I realize I dove straight into questions without saying that I really like the work you've done here! It works pretty great on planets with an atmosphere, and I'm looking forward to a version that has input of solar radiation. Dealing with the huge day / night fluctuations on moons sounds like it would be a fun engineering challenge. (Current situation is opposite of vanilla: you end up needing only heating systems, when in reality daytime temperatures in the sun should be approaching 270 C)
Chronia 9 Nov, 2024 @ 9:47pm
How does this interact with voxels? Is the terrain still a perfect insulator? If you were to pressurize a cave / tunnel, would the only heat loss be through the airlock structure?
Free Lunch  [author] 21 Oct, 2024 @ 8:18am
@sintri, no input radiation from solar to walls/frames in this mod, yet. I haven't found a way to do this efficiently without killing the frame rate.

Wall heaters (or any energy conversion from solar panels/wind turbines to heat) are very weak and energy expensive. Moon is probably doable still, but any other planet (i.e. Europa) will require you to use more creative and "fun" heating methods. Hint, try using devices that combust oxite and volatiles, and generate hot gasses.
sintri 20 Oct, 2024 @ 5:02pm
I assume this is bidirectional? If so how do I collect some of that sweet sunlight heat? Can I just paint some panels black?

But yea, I'm bleeding heat and relying on a unsustainable amount of wall heaters.
sintri 19 Oct, 2024 @ 3:23am
Guess it does make stuff like the moon far more challenging when all your heat's being radiated straight out to space.
sintri 19 Oct, 2024 @ 12:29am
So I was playing vanilla, built a moon base and nothing was generating heat yet the temperature never moved. How is this not in the base game?
Free Lunch  [author] 18 Oct, 2024 @ 12:41pm
I've fixed a calculation bug. Larger rooms did not properly calculate heat/gain loss. Sorry.
Free Lunch  [author] 12 Oct, 2024 @ 3:56pm
@Sazamaki; the mod has been updated to work with the latest version. Thanks :)
Sazamaki 12 Oct, 2024 @ 9:03am
@Free Lunch thanks i ended up managing the temperature at vulcan using as you recommend steel outside and padded inside, with some vaccum around,

btw i guess the update broke the mod, at least i had the feeling it was not working
Free Lunch  [author] 12 Oct, 2024 @ 9:00am
@Sazamaki; yes, materials matter. Checkout the description for more info to see what materials are good at what. You don't need to make the padded walls visible to utilise their properties. There are many creative ways to insulate your base, if you are willing to experiment.
Sazamaki 8 Oct, 2024 @ 10:47am
hello Free Lunch first of all thanks for the amazing mod

i would like to know if it matters which type of wall i'm using

something like the padded wall kit has lots of variables

the padded walls (thin) are giving me the feeling of being in a sanatory haha, they look really bad
ryangoslinglover306 6 Oct, 2024 @ 11:47am
holy shit thank you so much for this mod
Swamp Taint Goods 5 Oct, 2024 @ 11:05am
Has anyone tried this on Vulcan with the plants and nutrition mod? Is it reasonable, without having to sit in a 1x1 vacuum room for hours on end?
Free Lunch  [author] 29 Sep, 2024 @ 9:00am
@ttr; this mod simulates your base as a thermal "resistance" network. Each wall / frame will add a some resistance (insulation) to heat flow. So having 2 walls back to back will slightly improve insulation (very little if iron, more if padded or composite). You will find that most of your insulation will happen at the first and last walls (ones that face into your room, and those that face the outside). Those walls usually have the highest thermal resistance because of gas (or vacuum) to solid interactions, and changing those will have large impact on your insulation. Checkout the "Tips" section in the description.
ttr 29 Sep, 2024 @ 3:35am
So you went from "frames are perfect insulator" to "you're Efed" :)

how this will work in situation when two walls are back to back?
SolarFlare1234 29 Sep, 2024 @ 1:57am
this mod is genius, thank you :shakinghands:
Free Lunch  [author] 27 Sep, 2024 @ 11:28pm
@Phhantom, no, this uses Newton's law of heat transfer via lumped resistive/capacitive model.
A resistive network is used to approximate heat flux between each room and the outside.
CosmicAggressor 26 Sep, 2024 @ 4:34pm
Man this would make it so much harder to start a base. But totally the sort of thing stationers should have in game already particularly if the devs designed for it and made it possible to get good thermal control built. Come to think of it this would neatly side step the problem my underground moon base was having with being completley unable to reduce heat below 50C. Although it may have caused a problem with the atmosphere freezing out. Not sure it would depend on how bare stone rates as insulator.
Phantom 26 Sep, 2024 @ 2:40pm
is this using laplace? really cool
Kastuk 24 Sep, 2024 @ 10:56am
That's most complex code I ever seen in modding there.
Vulcy 24 Sep, 2024 @ 6:52am
I hate how this isnt in the vanilla game...
uselessfacts 24 Sep, 2024 @ 6:51am
this sounds like a nightmare, ooh fun
WIKUS 24 Sep, 2024 @ 3:27am
First. That is pretty awesome :steamthis:
