Hulett Unloader

@Cube, The Hulett Unloaders were designed for unloading Lakers, that is, Great Lakes Ore Freighters. They planted them dockside on their own rail system and then ran railroad tracks behind them. The operator rode in the compartment just above the bucket and used the bucket to scoop taconite pellets (iron ore mixed with limestone) out of freighter holds.

The unloader would then slide backwards and drop the taconite at it's base, where a conveyor carried it to the rear and dumped it into the waiting ore gondolas on the rail line behind the unloaders. This way a single freighter could be unloaded in a few hours instead of a few days. They were all over the Detroit river and Lake Erie ports like Cleveland back in the early 1900s; there was even one in NYC that unloaded garbage for a time.
