Just how it is, arma engine has its limits. Any workaround will not be worth the extra code and performance hits it entails.

The respawn in the simplified ships should behave the same as on non simplified ones, guess I will have to take a look.
The ai shooting after respawning is being worked on.
AI crews being spawned despite no intention is fixed with the next version already.

Issue when attaching a respawn module in 3den to a simplified Blufor frigate will give an error message (upon respawning using said module) about failing to assign the ship to the proper side and result in friendly fire from other Blufor AI controlled ships. Do not know if this happens with other sides, non-simplified ships or non frigates as I didn't test for that after finding it.

It also appears attaching a respawn module, saving the file, and then reopening the file causes the simplified ships to gain AI crews even without the option ticked.

@Luca I think I figured out what makes it happen. It seems to happen if I give the ship a variable name (I wanted to attach some things in the cabin for one of the sloops). It seems to "stick" though, so it still happens even though I remove the variable name. If I place a new ship without a variable name it doesn't happen.

I guess the name messes with the spawn script somehow!

I seem to be having an issue where crews spawn in some of the simplified ships I place even though the crew-button isn't checked in the editor. Doesn't seem to happen with the non-simplified ships. Doesn't seem to happen with every ship I place either...

@ariel some of the compositions that have the yawl attached to the stern works well for landing ai. Ill try to upload the scenario that does that next weekend. It's based on the whaling video I uploaded based on the aurther Pym novel. the ai crew detaches from the yawl, disembarks on a exotic island, and promptly gets ambushed by natives using the primitive mod w/ ims. The survivors get back on the yawl and once they get 40 meters of the boat, it activates a trigger that reattaches the yawl to the boat.

I've had no luck getting ims to work on board ships. The closest I had to getting melee is the push/punch mod and throwing weapons like the poison knife. As for accessing inventory, I've had very good success using the extended ace interaction menu to get into the yawl while it's attached to the boat to get access to items

A workaround is to carry a boat on your ship, then you can sit inside the boat (like any arma vic) and use the inventory from there.

Not possible due to engine limits on the side of arma.

That is a limitation on the side of WMO/Arma which is built into nassau. You can use the virtual arsenal but not your inventory on ships while they are moving. Nothing that can be done about that I'm afraid.

Would it be possible in the future for units on ships to be IMS?
I imagine a scenario where you can land on an island and fight with natives or pirates.
And of course, let me dream about ship-to-ship boarding, that would be the holy grail.

(By the way, using ACHILLES you can enter some units, although you can't do much other than observe)
