[OUTDATED] 'Ghost' Hybrid Fighter

Yes AI turrets will have a hard time hitting you, but the devs might change how AI targetting works in the future. If I remember correctly there was an iteration of AI targetting in the past that always perfectly calculated where you would be when the bullets reached you and when I was testing my gravity drive bomber (which admittedly was 11 large blocks wide and high) the constant stream of bullets that always hit the exact same spot ate a hole through my heavy armor in no time. But even if turrets will remain a minor threat, in a dogfight or vs really fast turning frigates you should expect to get hit by a few missiles, since many fighters are also able to circle around a target at ~70 ms/s and also get shot down eventually. But a single missile to your mass block or cockpit and you're in trouble.

Wow, that is a heavy compliment! Thank you! I love Ravric's Heavy Interceptor/Bomber, and they're actually part of what inspired the Ghost.

1) Because building it entirely large grid will probably increase the size more than five fold, and make it very difficult to balance how dampening interacts with the gravity drive. The point was to create something very compact that could orbit at high speeds at close range, making it an absurdly hard ship to target - manually or via AI. Making it a hybrid grid made this much easier.

2) Personally, I hate trying to fight at close range via cameras, so that wasn't really an option to me when I designed it. Also, it's worth noting that this thing is so fast and deals so much damage, you really don't get hit unless you make a mistake. I should have shown it in the video, but those two fights in the "Reveal" video resulted in virtually no damage to the Ghost. Minor armor deformation, and that's it.

Ok wow. This is the most powerful fighter I've seen so far. I thought my Meteor Fighter or Ravric's Heavy Interceptor were strong, but this thing outguns and outspeeds them all. My only two quarrels with it are:
1) If your propulsion + your main attack systems both stem from large grid blocks, why aren't you building a fighter-like large ship in the first place? Using small ship blocks just makes everything way more fragile.
2) Exposed cockpit. In a fight you're expecting to take most of the damage from the front, so it's counter-intuitive to place your most valuable block (the pilot seat) there. A single random missile might be the end of this awesome contraption after all the effort and components that went into making it. This is a very large ship, there is plenty of space in the back to blace the cockpit and control it via several cameras (so that you're not left with aiming in 3rd person, if one gets taken out)
Other than that I love the design. Great work!!

@Aiden Corvas
Partially updated, if you want to take her out for a spin. FYI, 3rd person camera isn't working right now, and the ship is now somewhat prone to breaking apart if you turn too quickly... Both issues are on my list to fix post-planets :P

@Hesterry Alrightty, well thank you for the answer! I hope you can make something to your liking again soon, I look forward or seeing it.

(if you post it as a new ship you should put a link in the comments here so everyone that has commented will get the notification incase they had missed it)!!!!

Thank you for the positive comments, everyone!

@Aiden Corvas
The ship is kind of out of comission right now, due to some changes to physics behavior and scripting. I'll update it fairly soon, though.

I might make a MK2 that will include a projector on the large grid for repairs, but the large grid is so simple, there isn't too much point right now. The small grid does have a projector for this, however.

Very nice ship sir. I would love to see this in a small ship gone large type deal. The presentation? EXCELENT. I wish more people made videos for their products (bleh I still need to finish my videos) and your narrative was perfect. Especially like how you highlighted where things went. And wow, your gravity drives...it was so simple, I never thought of making it so small just those large ship ones..but one black and one block. The only thing I would of liked to see was the holo block things, one to repair, the other to do whatever it was..(sorry in hospital under meds so my note might be confusing). I just would love to see it turning on and off or whatever it did. This isn't a negative to you or anything, it's just what I was really interested in seeing.

Anyway to sum up, I can't wait till I eventually get to go home and take this for a spin, and can not wait to see what you might come up with next. Kudos to you

Insane to build however, You wont need another combat ship. I love this thing.

great to see a ship like this mod free :) AND yuo make awsome video presentations! cheers

@A†
I hope it serves you well :)

@The Bustiest Rucket
I'll have to think about it. I generally avoid using mods, as it limits who can use my creations. If I do make something modded, it won't be for a while, unfortunately. I have a huge list of things I want to make first :P
The Bustiest Rucket 13 Jun, 2015 @ 10:24pm
@hesterry would it be possible for you to make a version using the Small Ship megamod pack? I'd love to see what havoc-wreaking ship you could make using that mod, plus it would make it easily viable to have oxygen inside the ship
A† 10 Jun, 2015 @ 2:52pm
I perfer to build my own stuff so I do not sub to a lot of ships, but this in with amazeon dude. 2 thumbs way up.
Hesterry  [author] 7 Jun, 2015 @ 3:12am
Thanks, both of you!

@Clipboard
Yeah, I was thinking of using timers initially, However, programs allowed me to do some more precise/reliable things, such as instantly reversing the polarity on the gravity drive with a single keystroke. The Launch and Dock programs are also easily customizable, so there's that as well :)
Clipboard 7 Jun, 2015 @ 2:52am
FYI I believe timers can turn things like aim at ships/missiles/etc. on and off.. May not even need a program. Amazing design BTW!

well done nice design, like the presentation nice, same goes for the top speed during the attack, cool, again well done
