I totally agree with you, that why i changed that in this mod.
- Factions with the same religion get a +60 diplomacy bonus with each other
- I looked at the different religions and their differences and similairities: For sample, all monotheistic religions like each other better. Christians like other christians. The more developed religions dislike the less developed religions, etc. On that basis they get a diplomacy bonus or penalty vs other religions between +40 and -40

Sadly, it is realistic that different religions hate eah other and that the same religion does not make very good friends.
In nunbers that means that in TWA having the same religion brings just +10 diplomacy, but having different religions rungs -40diplomay, WTF!!!
I would like to have a change:
same religion: +40
familiar religion (just like I have latin christianity to the other crhistianities, or the northern paganisms to each other) +10
completely different religions: *-10
With this mod religion will have a bigger impact on everything. Franks can be the one spreding chritianity true whole europe, even making other faction have chritianity to, but they will have much resistance
I decided to start from scratch and not use the Clovis mod as base for my mod, so i have to make everything myself, takes more time for me to make, but i think i'll be able to.
At which turn/faction is it crashing?
Do you use other mods with my mod? Mayby you use a conflicting mod?

Future: will probably make a new mod soon, a 1 turn a year with Islam emerging after sbout 100 turns as a new major religion, (in year 630). This will give the player a real big late game challenge. The Islam and the emerging faction will be like an endboss. First result are looking good, but i'm doing it all alone and i'm new at this, so patience!

Changing religion now makes a big difference in the attitude towards other factions with similair or very different religions

@Fuzzyballs01 well, it makes it at least harder to win, it will take you longer. Ai will probably also not get stronger very fast, but this mod favours smaller factions, it's hard to get big and keep you population in check. Rebellions will happen more often
just slower because I have to keep my armies there for a while longer
