The alans, in reality, were more like a support horde for the vandals.
As the alans, you should really work with your ally for the first few turns, backstabbing is a no-go.
Its also a little bit of help for the AI, in the vanilla game, they prefer to raid then to get in the horde stance.
Also, moving to your ally, the vandals, will help.
Delete some units,move around in more fertile land and try to end your turn always in the horde stance.
