It should still work, but it is also obsolete/unnecessary, as the devs have now included an option to disable shattered retreat in the vanilla game rules.
Pull Out The Godcard 21 Jul, 2020 @ 7:23am
Does this still work, because I started a new game and did not notice I left shatteredretreat on for the first 20 years of my game...
Schnitz 2 Jan, 2019 @ 11:51pm
Shattered retreat can be disabled in the game rules
Mai the destroyer 24 Jul, 2018 @ 3:14am
is this being maintained?

Sorry to bother
Fine 30 Jul, 2017 @ 12:17pm
Pretty sure you can do this without a mod on the in-game rule screen
Martydi 19 Sep, 2016 @ 10:43am
You noticed thay there is option to turn shattered reatreat off or on in vanilla game?
thicc bricc 22 Jul, 2016 @ 7:30pm
Is not compatible with the A Game of Thrones mod. Crashes the game in seemingly random intervals.
Wolfera 10 Jul, 2016 @ 12:45am
Installed the mod and now I get no warscore from battles...

Shittered retreat ruined EU4, so naturally they decided to bring it to CK2. Thx for the fix.
ChristenedInBlood 27 Mar, 2016 @ 8:59am
Brilliant creation ... I love this mod so much that it is hard to explain EXACTLY how much I love this mod.
Skooming Johnners 5 Mar, 2016 @ 2:11pm
I don't think it works with the newest patch, but Shattered Retreat isn't as bad as it used to be but it's still annoying.
Dr Fish 4 Mar, 2016 @ 4:14pm
Have to say I hope this works, I have just had an army beaten in India and they are retreating all the way back to Brugge!!!!! Half way across the globe.
Sabateur 1 Mar, 2016 @ 12:23am
So, just for clarity, defeated armies will still retreat, but they won't phantom at supersonic speeds all the way back to their "friendly" territory with no recourse allowed, even if every territory they move through is occupied by enemy troops, correct?
The Nil  [author] 8 Feb, 2016 @ 2:40pm
Yes, that's exactly what the mechanic does. I also thought it was a bad addition to the game, hence this mod.
Iduno 8 Feb, 2016 @ 2:34pm
Is shattered retreat the reason opponents run through armies across 4-5 counties before they turn around and attack again?

If so, totally need this mod.
Legionary Guard 8 Feb, 2016 @ 1:39pm
@ Le Comte: You've obviously never blobbed hard in EUIV and then lost a battle. My glorious armies routing across literally the entirety of Europe, from Seville to Vilnius, have occured before.
Le Comte 7 Feb, 2016 @ 2:49pm
I didn't think anything of shattered retreat until after losing a battle in Cyrenaica my army uncontrollably "retreated" across all of fucking North Africa then to the Southernmost province on the fucking map in Mali.
The Nil  [author] 6 Feb, 2016 @ 7:31pm
Subscribing downloads the mod automatically through Steam, along with any updates thereto. The mod is tiny and should download instantly, so you should be able to select it in the CK2 launcher whenever you start the game.
Judge Holden 6 Feb, 2016 @ 7:15pm
anyone know of a mod that sets the opinion modifiers back to the way they used to be? thanks.
Judge Holden 6 Feb, 2016 @ 7:14pm
how do i download this? i subscribed, but i still don't see a download option. ty
Carapace Cross 6 Feb, 2016 @ 5:45pm
Wishdreamer thats not possible with the clauswitz engine.
wishdreamer 6 Feb, 2016 @ 2:34pm
If to go further,

Any leader associated with the defeated army will have a defeated army traits. There why in history, defeated general get swap out or behead when they are defeated.

If to go even further,

normal/shatter retreated applied depend on general martial/ leadership skill

If to go Full historical mode

Formula the enermy General vs Own faction general martial skill and leadership skill to determine Shatter and normal Retreat

Just putting this out there =P (sorry for the two post. word limit)
wishdreamer 6 Feb, 2016 @ 2:34pm
shatter retreat should only applied if:

"Morale do no recover over time when they are retreating and added with a Heavy Penalty Recovering Cost+ wtih a bad Buff of "defeated army ".

it make sense right? When retreating, loser army ditch their equipment so that they can run faster than attacker.

Plus the morale doesnt recover when they are retreating, only the time when their retreated to friendly base, then they can recover their morale and extra cost needed to replenish their equipment back.

Not only that, the morale of that army will not be the same as before until certain time has passed. Thus, "defeated army" trait is needed. (we can use the defeated peasant trait on the general)

I'll look into making a situational version like that which only applies to attacks from the sea, but I'm not sure it will be possible. There are several moddable variables regarding the shattered retreat, but they mostly relate to distance retreated rather than any specific situation triggering it.
Domaldel 6 Feb, 2016 @ 4:56am
Any chance of variants of this mod for specific cultures and/or amphibian attacks?
For instance it annoyes the heck out of me that *vikings* don't flee back to their boats when fleeing but instead move further *innland* to cause even *more* of a nusance...
But I actually quite like the mechanics for *regular* combat with land based armies...
⚔Gared⚔ 5 Feb, 2016 @ 5:29pm
ah ok thanks
The Nil  [author] 5 Feb, 2016 @ 4:45pm
They retreat normally, once province at a time, just like they used to. The mod has no effect on coalitions, but there is another recent mod that disables those as well.
⚔Gared⚔ 5 Feb, 2016 @ 4:36pm
so wait armies can't retreat?
Coolka23 5 Feb, 2016 @ 4:17pm
does it stop coalitions too? major problem i have now is when i want to get land through small holy wars and everyone in the world is on the enemies side even every muslim in the game took me 4 years to win
The Nil  [author] 5 Feb, 2016 @ 3:54pm
Paradox recently updated the game to versio 2.5, and one feature of that update was the "shattered retreat," which causes defeated armies to retreat several provinces at once the way they do in EU4. This mod disables that feature, restoring the original retreat system.
⚔Gared⚔ 5 Feb, 2016 @ 2:33pm
so wait i dont get it, what does it do?
thicc bricc 5 Feb, 2016 @ 1:36pm
Wow! Thanks!
The Nil  [author] 5 Feb, 2016 @ 1:35pm
Almost definitely. Let me know if it isn't, but it really should be compatible with every other mod in existence.
thicc bricc 5 Feb, 2016 @ 1:34pm
CkII+ compatible? I'm assuming not, but is it possible?
The Nil  [author] 5 Feb, 2016 @ 8:34am
@Bill: as another already pointed out, these changes were added via patch 2.5 for all players and can't be opted out of unless you roll back to a previous game version. This mod is for people who don't want to have to do that and would like to stay with the current version sans shattered retreats.
Blacklist3d 5 Feb, 2016 @ 7:15am
Bill, shattered retreat isn't part of Conclave, it is actually part of the base game as of patch 2.5 and can't be "disabled".
So thank you Stanley.
Scorpioneldar 5 Feb, 2016 @ 3:49am
steve one thing you should never if you can help it enter an even battle. if you can stack the odds to have more men better leaders and better terrain on your side do so even if you have to take longer routes to avoid terrain ect. shattered retreat destroys the realisum of this game. before you could retreat from combat at any time by clicking away and the AI often did to. however in real life you often can encircle and hunt down anemy forces and the best leaders only let specifically selected enemies escape to spread the story of their power ahead of their advance. Hannible, Iskander (known today as alexander the great) even Shaka Zulu all pulled off battles compleatly slaughtering the enemy either capturing or killing down to either the last man or just a couple of straglers. both Hannible and Shaka Zulu aimed for such a result every battle and both of them pulled off such triumphs with near regular consistancy.
Basileus Red Rain 5 Feb, 2016 @ 2:58am
If I wanted the state of game like it was before Conclave, I would just disable the DLC on the list.
ProphetSteve 4 Feb, 2016 @ 10:59pm
I agree with your complaints about the shatted retreat.

On that note, I looked through the defines.lua file and found that there are variables related to shattered retreats that can be changed. I think I'll reduce the speed at which a shattered army moves so they aren't all Zulu athletes and the number of provinces they can run away to so they aren't moving across whole countries. I like shattered retreat, but I'll change these numbers to make it more sensible.
The Nil  [author] 4 Feb, 2016 @ 10:51pm
I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I gave the shattered retreat plenty of chances in EU4. I prioritize historical plausibility over game balance, and this mechanic throws the former under the bus in favor of the latter.

I would much rather be able to encircle and destroy armies, chase them down, or even wipe them out in one decisive battle (all things which have happened numerous times throughout history) than watch invincible armies march at superhuman speed across an entire country while reinforcing the whole way.
ProphetSteve 4 Feb, 2016 @ 10:41pm
Obviously I won't rate this down because it probably does what it advertises, but you should all give the shattered retreat a chance. Do you really want your wars settled by one victory? Giving defeated armies the opportunity to retreat and fight again is realistic and reduces the amount of luck involved in winning wars, because a dice roll often decides the outcome of an even battle.
Atwalmart 4 Feb, 2016 @ 6:35pm
Thank you. I HATE the new update.
Sabertooth 4 Feb, 2016 @ 4:56pm
THANK YOUUUU

THANK YOU
Luckspeare 4 Feb, 2016 @ 4:11pm
Thank you! The shattered retreat mechanic is incredibly annoying and hokey. Hope they remove or drastically fix it soon.
Seph 4 Feb, 2016 @ 4:09pm
You are a gentleman and a schoral sir
DeosPraetorian 4 Feb, 2016 @ 2:10pm
