Gibbing heads or weapons is pretty effective.
But different enough to be its own mod
I just recommend changing the names of the units (minus the brain) to something less like the florans, in aspect to their name, as warriors and mercs are literally THE SAME.
But besides that is a pretty good mod
Another change I'd like to mention is the new look for Avian Warriors. They now look like buffed aztec-like... birds. :P

-It's really cumbersome so it weights a lot and aiming it is limited sometimes.
-Handguns charge up to 4, Rifles up to 12 and this Cannon can charge up to 30.
-Firing is different. You need to hold down the firing button and it will start charging. Once completely charged, the beam will be released.
-It's possible to fire the beam early by releasing the firing button but you risk weapon not firing at all if you release too early.
-It does the same amount of damage than the rifle but since it can fire up to 30 charges, it can easily pierce bunker walls.

@Admiral Jamison: You are right about the helms. They are too OP. I've actually changed this for both Florans and Avians in my game but I'm trying to add more changes before a release. These are the current changes so far:
Florans
-Helms are not overpowered anymore. They break when heavily damaged.
-Florans with helms have leaf hair under them now.
-Fixed a bug causing Floran Greenfingers to use a back leg as the front one.
-Fixed some items using the wrong materials.
Avians
-Added 2 more feather hairstyles and edited some of the existing ones.
-Helms are not overpowered anymore. They break when heavily damaged.
-Avians with helms have feather hair under them now.
the armor penetration seems so be a bit to low. And the helmets are to tough
I will add more variety in energy weapons, though. Maybe a really powerful cannon that can charge up to 20 but at a slow rate. I could also add something similar to a shotgun.
I could add something with a higher fire rate but since these weapons recharge their ammo automatically, it would just be able to fire non stop like it happens with the current ones.
but i have the feeling that the weapons are really underpowerd in terms of damage and firerate
