Station sectors overflowing with trash.
Does anyone know a way to reduce the tiny wreckage pieces that accumulate after salvaging ships ? One sector with a few of my stations is dropping to below 20 fps because of the thousands of tiny pieces of ship debris that salvaging Ai leaves behind. ive tried going through it manually but before you can even finish one trash cloud more ships invade making more mess. Its like a never ending cycle of trash. Ive tried changing the server configs for wreckage despawn time, but i think since i have stations in the sector the game never considers me far enough away to even start the despawn timer. Ive waited hours in sector, in different sectors, and even boosting to the other end of the sector so that nothing even renders, but the TRASH NEVER GOES AWAY. Pls help me find my lost framerate.

Hi,

So real quick first, you've posted in the Workshop discussion section. This area sees less traffic and (generally) shouldn't be used for this type of stuff. For future reference, you'd be better off going to the General Discussion section, or even the purpose built Help & Troubleshooting section for something like this.

But, as to your issue, I can't say I've ever had a real problem with this before. Typically, I can't get to all the wrecks fast enough and they start despawning on me. I've seen whole wrecked stations vanish before my eyes.

You might be able to solve it though by doing this:
  1. Make note of the sector x,y coordinates where you are having this problem.
  2. Move all of your ships out of that sector (if you can; don't panic if you can't. There are only a few minor glitches that happen from the following steps if you have ships/stations in there and all are fixable from in game. Just takes a few minutes).
  3. Exit to the main menu (or exit the game completely if it's easier).
  4. Go to this file location on your PC: %appdata%\Avorion\galaxies\<save-game-name>\sectors (I only know this file path on Windows, sorry.)
  5. In here every sector has 2 files for it. Find the two that correspond to the coordinates you noted in step 1 and delete them both.
  6. Restart your game and fly back to this sector.

That will force the game to regenerate the sector, to include removing all of the wreckage in there.

Again, don't worry if you can't get everything of yours out of that sector. Anything you have to leave behind will still be there, there will just be minor glitches that occur (like resetting all weapon groups) that are easily fixed.

Hey thanks for replying. I've noticed trash not despawning pretty much everywhere i go in the game, But it only really becomes a glaring issue in places where i have to stay for a long time like my stations. If you are saying that trash typically despawns quickly then its probably an issue with the mods i am using somewhere. Nothing pops out at me as changing despawn times but ill post a list of the mods im using in a minute here.

Hmm, yeah, it may be. I know in single player, server config defaults are:

BigWreckageDespawnTime=1800
SmallWreckageDespawnTime=900

Where SmallWreckage is any single chunk under 15 blocks, IIRC.

Ive tried changing those manually. I changed small to 300 and big to 600 and then waited about an hour but nothing despawned.
Here is my mod list.

Laserzwei's Production chain S
Laserzwei's move asteroids
claim.lua claim() hook
Laserzwei's simple asteroid respawn mod
Loot Order
Craft Orders Lib
claimable resource asteroids
No independent targeting penalty
Exodus Fix
Bottan fixes
Auto Research
turret tweaks for cy
trading overveiw fixes
sector overview
gate founder
crewboard tweaks
cargo control
azimuthlib - library for modders
galaxy map qol
trade route tweaks

Laserzwei's basic commands for the carrier commander
Laserzwei's carrier commander

I've left quoted below mods that I myself am not actively using. I left a couple notes on two of them, though.

Laserzwei's Production chain S
Laserzwei's simple asteroid respawn mod
No independent targeting penalty (<-- I don't currently use this one, but have before. I doubt this one is causing the issue)
turret tweaks for cy
trading overveiw fixes
sector overview (<-- Is this "Flight Sector Overview"? I do use that one, but didn't pull from list cause I wasn't sure if this was the one you were referring to)
gate founder
trade route tweaks
compass-like gate pixel icons
system scanner upgrade

That should help you get started in finding the culprit.

I'd almost put money on System Scanner Upgrade, though, as it's scans wrecks for certain block types. I wonder if the interaction of this scan is enough to refresh and keep the wrecks alive?

For testing, too, I'd drop the timers in the server.ini file down to like 10 or 30 secs, that way you don't have to wait more than a minute or so to be sure.

yeah ill try that. Would that only apply to new wrecks though?

Its just called Sector Overview by Rinart73 it adds a tab that lets you quickly see what ships stations or other things are in a sector. Ill test system scanner upgrade first. I hope that is it because ive never used it anyway.

If my understanding of stuff is correct and what may be happening, then no. But I can't guarantee that.

So i disabled the mod and loaded up my problem sector and all trash clouds did not despawn. to further test i found some pirates in another sector to find that their wreckages did despawn in the 10 seconds that i put in settings. I reinstalled the mod and killed another to find that it also despawned in 10 seconds.

So it would appear that the existing trash in my home sector is not affected by changes to the despawn config.

ill try regenerating the sector using the method you described and do some more testing.

So i regenerated the sector and i think i know what the problem was. This sector is filled with preexisting wreckages from made by the sector generation algorithm. And apparently these will never despawn naturally. When i sent my salvaging drones out to salvage they left little trash clouds all over the place that wont go away and i mistook those 30 or so trash clouds for those from invading ships. Since i dont want to clean them all up manually i will probably scrap my stations and build elsewhere, this sector has bad visibility anyway. The fps drops i experienced in other sectors might be explained by not waited the 15 minutes required to despawn small wreckages. Not sure. Ill keep playing with this configuration and see if any further issues emerge.

Once again i want to thank you for your time and input. I almost never post problems in forums because the only responses i seem to get are either folks who didnt read properly and misinterpreted the issue or fanboys diving in to stress how miniscule they think the problems are and how great the game is overall. So i really appreciate the time and effort you put in to help me.
FuryoftheStars 2 Apr, 2020 @ 9:19am
Ah, that indeed could the issue there.

As an after thought, too, if you are able to get a hold of some Independent Targeting salvaging turrets, they could help in the cleanup effort (you could just park in the middle of the cloud and let them go to work rather than trying to manually target everything).
Roet 2 Apr, 2020 @ 9:48am
Yeah i think i will do that. Especially since ive noticed i have a resource asteroid there that i built into a xanion mine with the claimable resource asteroids mod. So i cant really rebuild it unless i happen to find another large xanion asteroid. And since i just got your wrangler mod those IT salvage turrets should be much easier to get.
