Needing Up To Date Tutorials On Item Modding
I'm looking to make two mod items using the games existing simple weapons, I'm wanting to literally duplicate the 60mm autocannon and 30mm cannon and make it so that the copies can use custom ammo inputs, just like the Casemates and Type A 3.7" guns. Maybe also give them built in range finders for use with flak/HE, timed/altitude fuses ect. as a cheap/compact CIWS option.

Anyway I'm needing any links to some item modding tutorials and videos. All I could find was some videos from 2016, I'm not too sure if those are still relevant/accurate to the games current build, files and directories. I wanted to know if there was any more recent tutorials buried in the community somewhere?

You may be in luck - this should be easy enough to do in just the ingame modding menu. Most simple weapons just use the class WorldWarCannon while the custom shell ones are WorldWarCannonCustomShells. If you just duplicate the weapon and change the class to WorldWarCannonCustomShells it seems to have exactly the functionality you're looking for.

Good that you mention range finding - the custom shell ones have HasLaserTargeter = 1 by default, and the regular cannons don't. My guess is you just need to add that variable yourself.

I'm sorry I can't help with the actual topic though. The most helpful resource I found was literally just the examplemod that comes with the game. The modding menu is pretty straightforward though, if ugly and a bit jank. You might need to just stumble through it, but I can try to help with any sticking points.
