A Couple of Mod Ideas from a Former SH3 Enthusiast
I offered these as suggestions to the devs, but I’m curious if they can possibly be addressed as mods. Hopefully some experienced Uboat modders can comment.

THE SOUND OF DOOM

Is there any way to reliably increase the frequency of audible pings when escorts are using active sonar? As it is now, I rarely ever hear audible pings when escorts are using active sonar nearby.

In SH3, escorts often switched between search methods and a major part of survival and success was to listen for active pinging and adjust tactics accordingly. If the escorts were pinging nearby, picking up engine speed was possible because they weren’t listening to hydrophones. Conversely, if all is silent, depth wasn’t as nearly important as noise level. In Uboat, I have no idea what the F' is going on with the escorts most of the time. Having discussed this matter in another thread, I just assume they are doing both simultaneously and at all times--not very realistic or interesting from a game play perspective.

So instead of “hearing” the danger coming, a yellow tooltip pops open to alert that I’m '100% detectable by active sonar.' When I first started playing, I didn’t even know what that was supposed to mean until someone on these discussion boards explained it.

As a final point, there are few things in subsim games more intense than hearing pings increase in volume and frequency as you know the jig is up and they’re coming for you! A yellow popup tool tip just don’t cut it here.

To the initiated modders here, can this be fixed?

SILENT HUNTING

I know there are several mods that change the stock music score. I wonder if it’s possible to replace the “being at depth/hunted” track with a silent audio file? When on patrol, the game’s music score is just fine. But when hunting a convoy or being hunted at depth, it breaks immersion in a distracting way. It’s much more immersive to simply hear the sounds of creaking and drops, overhead propellers, crew members’ whispers, and the dreaded sound of pinging.

Anyway, if anyone likes these ideas, I’d really love to see them as mods. I’d try to make them myself, but I can’t make ‘heads or tails’ yet on modding with Unity.

And that brings up another one of the wishlist--It would be very cool if a knowledgeable modder created a video tutorial on how to mod Uboat with Unity!!! I tried following a written tutorial so I could experiment with reskinning the sub and just gave up at this point. My days of modding were back when games had hierarchical folders that all one needed to do was replace existing files with new ones with identical names. I guess we can’t even touch the skin textures without exporting and importing them through Unity. Arrgghh!
