Noob modding assistance for pilot portraits?
So apparently MW5 editor is only available on Epic. I don't have an Epic account and don't want to install Epic launcher just to get the editor (I also don't want to own MW5 on Epic a second time, if that's a requirement).

Now, is there any easy way to mod without that? All I want is to add in some custom pilot portraits. Battletech had a convenient way of adding pilot portraits with a single mod, and you can even manually add it using the save editor which lets you change pilot icons. Is there something similar for MW5, or can you edit any existing player created pilot portrait mod to export in your own portraits?

Would appreciate the help.

Unfortunately none that I am aware of. You don't need to own MW5 to get the mod tools on Epic. You can add pilot portraits same way you can add custom Mech portraits. It's actually pretty simple to do once you know what goes where. The only issue is if you don't have a great CPU you'll be spending a while packaging the pak files up.

The modding tools are over 100gb iirc and just obnoxious to learn to use in general. I'd just recommend using this mod which I have been enjoying very much:

https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/477

330's Pilot Overhaul, which among other things, lets you customize any of your merc's bios, names and portraits and includes a bit over 200 portraits to choose from. (Including most if not all of the portraits from HBS Battletech, which I really liked.)

Does it still allow you to inject your own custom portraits?

I don't think any mod will have that feature, because afaik all the mod files must be compiled to .pak, and you need the modding tools to tweak it at all. Unfortunately.

I was just hoping to offer an alternative as there are plenty of nice portraits to use in the overhaul mod that worked for me.

Okk, thanks for the help.

I honestly only need portraits, I will go for a total overhaul on my next run once the vanilla run is completed.

I know there was a mod in the past that simply added all those portraits to the random pilot gen pool, but I think it was removed from nexus in favor of the overhaul 330 put out. I think in the mod page for the overhaul he mentions a way to use only the portraits and not the overhaul stuff. Hope that helps.

If you're referring to FakeID, I have it. Changed a few. Its only problem is that if you launch a mission with that enabled, game will crash.

You have to load a save with FakeID enabled, change the portraits ONLY, save the game, then disable the mod & restart MW5 w/o it. Then play normally.

Nah there was an older one before FakeID that doesn't exist on Nexus anymore, I tried looking for it. Like I said it only added all of the battletech portraits and some others to the random gen pool.

Yes because it gives you the whole game. You'll enjoy it even more when you figure out the game is one big .pak file.

Okay so... guess what, I got around to tinkering with the mod editor. But it seems I can only override existing default portraits, but any extra portraits I add in (256x256 PNG) are not registered. How do you expand the pilot portrait list with fresh portraits without replacing the vanilla ones?

I would post on 330's Pilot Overhaul on the Nexus and you may be able to get some help from him. Usually the nexus members are decently active!

NVM, I found the solution. You need to create additional portrait objects under Campaign\Personas\Portraits\Allies\ folder, then attach the PNGs to these portrait objects.

I downloaded a 98.4 GB monster just to get this done. Deep inside I want to punch myself lol :captainclown:

Was going to say, don't put additional content in mod override. And yes, gone are the days when you could just make a 64x64 .tga and share it with the world easily without having to pack up game files.
