With mods you can get back to your ship everywhere, start casual and add hunger. You have non breakabke teleporters, that means it will stay where you put it, or emergency teleporter that is one time use and have to craft again.
Your ship won't move by itself and as far I know nothing change that, but it act as a hub here.
There used to be a tracking system in beta where you could see they way you traveled in the star map. Don't know if mods add this back.
You can bookmark locations in the star map and use it to travel back to previously visited places. Don't if people really use it, flags are pretty cheap.
The game is coded this way and didn't get any update (even any news) for years, so don't expect any change by the dev.
There is community project trying to fix and improve the game called OpenStarbound, they have GuitHub page and a Discord, though I think they are mostly trying to improve performances, but you could suggest it to them.
