OK so I will spell it out for you. If the engineer's job, for example, is only engineering then, yes with proper storage, they will ditch resources. But once you add on other jobs, they tend to get excess materials in their inventory, thus making the ditch resources button desirable. You should know this already if you've played the game 50+ hours. Thanks for trying to be helpful
when ditch items is enabled, it keeps the inventory clear, expect for what the worker is working on. even with multiple jobs.
usually the issue is the worker getting in a feedback loop of constantly dropping/picking up resources. or unable to pick up resources trapped in an inaccessible place on the ground.
it is best to have one worker per job.
and yes, i know how it works, been playing it for nearly 4k hours.
In my experience, the best way to avoid this is to not have one character working too many different jobs or too many characters working the same job. Either of those setups can frequently lead to inventory clogging, while a more streamlined setup can run pretty much indefinitely. Might not be feasible, though, depending on how many characters you have and what roles they need to fill.
Otherwise, the only thing I can think to try is adding some hauling jobs to the character's job list. Normally, hauling jobs aren't necessary and can actually cause the AI to get stuck in a loop if the job list isn't ordered correctly, but maybe they could help here. The main thing to keep in mind is to not put a hauling job above a job that requires that item because that causes a loop. So I would try something like:
- engineering
- hauling items used only for engineering
- job A
- hauling items used only for job A
- job B
- hauling items used only for job B
- etc
Just occurred to me that you could also use a cheat backpack mod to at least significantly delay the issue if you can't prevent it another way.
