Fanfiction is bad. *E* In a lot of cases at least.
Please just create your own characters, it's easier than trying to frame the personality of a character that already exists.

It makes me cringe a lot.

I'm going to make a RPG based on you.

I share your opinion. When people make "DBZ the RPG" I vomit in my mouth a little. Original characters and original RPGs are honestly the best.

I read some amazing fanfictions and some great stories started as fanfictions turned original. I wouldn't say it's always bad. Or big shot artists making it there because of their Doujinshis. I do agree with more originality though :P

Fanfictions, when done properly, can expand on the universe more than the creators could alone. One such universe is that of Touhou. I believe in Atlanta ZUN actually said he writes very little backstory on the characters simply because he enjoys seeing what the fans write on a character. In this way the "fanon" actually becomes "canon".

*Some* might be good but if you take a look at the workshop you will notice pretty soon that the quality is nowhere near that.

Pretty much this. And I think people would just be able to write stories that are much better if they didn't bind themselves to an already existing franchise. It's honestly not that hard.

Considering the quality of a lot of the original works in the Workshop, I'd say the ratio of good fanfictions to originals is pretty similar.

I enjoy well-made games, original and fandom. Saying it's "bad, no exceptions" is just...well, objectively wrong.

Well as long as the original autors of the said fiction are contacted and gives the go if you want to commercialize some fannings!

Yeah... fan fiction and tributes...
<.<
... those guys are so unoriginal.

They make me sick...
o.o
We should all... beat them or something. One sec...

Especially people who make Elfen Lied tributes. Seriously, they should not be allowed on the Internet ever. Deport them to Antarctica where they belong.

*ahem* But in all seriousness, nothing wrong with fan games at all. You'll get just a many good fan games as you'll get original stuff. Let's face it, almost every user of this program has made a Final Fantasy fan game, and there are even some good ones out there (see also: Final Fantasy: Endless Nova). We all have ways we'd like to continue certain stories we've heard and a lot of us like playing them. Nothing wrong with that.

Let's see: Dragon Fantasy for RPG Maker (found on rpg maker dot net) is a really good tribute to both the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. Heroes Realm is a very good tribute to the Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest: Legacy of the Lost (made for VX) was a very well done game based on Dragon Quest lore. Blackmoon Prophecy was a highly polished and well received game that was done as a tribute to the Final Fantasy games. Super Mario Bros RPG: Seven Sages is probably one of the best fan games I've seen, very professionally done and near commercial-worthy.

Sure, there are just as many bad ones as well. I get tired of all the Pokemon clones, and DZ, and Suikoden fan games, but that doesn't make all fan games instantly bad.

As I said I migth have been a lil' harsh by calling ALL fangames bad. My mainpoint is that putting the effort you put into a fangame could have been put into something original which is better in 9 out of 10 cases. Or at the very least more interesting.

Completely understandable.

I'm a regular reader at fanfiction.net, and...yeah, a lot of it is garbage. But then you get a few that are actually pretty good writers (and a VERY select few that, in my opinion, are better at writing the story than the original writers)

Likewise with fanart. Quite a lot of it is lousy, but some of them are astonishingly good.
