Pretty much this. And I think people would just be able to write stories that are much better if they didn't bind themselves to an already existing franchise. It's honestly not that hard.
I enjoy well-made games, original and fandom. Saying it's "bad, no exceptions" is just...well, objectively wrong.
All those Haters and Nay Sayers, dont listen to them XD.
<.<
... those guys are so unoriginal.
>.>
They make me sick...
o.o
We should all... beat them or something. One sec...

*ahem* But in all seriousness, nothing wrong with fan games at all. You'll get just a many good fan games as you'll get original stuff. Let's face it, almost every user of this program has made a Final Fantasy fan game, and there are even some good ones out there (see also: Final Fantasy: Endless Nova). We all have ways we'd like to continue certain stories we've heard and a lot of us like playing them. Nothing wrong with that.
Sure, there are just as many bad ones as well. I get tired of all the Pokemon clones, and DZ, and Suikoden fan games, but that doesn't make all fan games instantly bad.
Completely understandable.
I'm a regular reader at fanfiction.net, and...yeah, a lot of it is garbage. But then you get a few that are actually pretty good writers (and a VERY select few that, in my opinion, are better at writing the story than the original writers)
Likewise with fanart. Quite a lot of it is lousy, but some of them are astonishingly good.
